About The Wharfedale EVO5.C Centre Speaker
If you’re building a high-performance home theatre system and want a centre speaker that can keep up with even the most demanding content, the Wharfedale EVO5.C should be at the top of your list. Designed to complement the rest of the EVO5 range, this centre channel delivers stunning clarity, exceptional tonal balance and a sense of scale that gives movie dialogue and effects the presence they deserve.
In any surround sound system, the centre speaker carries the majority of the dialogue and a large portion of the action. It needs to be fast, detailed and accurate, all while remaining tonally consistent with the front left and right speakers. The EVO5.C achieves all of this and more, thanks to its refined 2-way design, premium driver technology and acoustic craftsmanship that Wharfedale is renowned for.
Kevlar Woofers: Solid Bass Foundation
The EVO5.C features twin 5-inch woven Kevlar bass drivers that provide a solid and responsive low-frequency performance. These are the same type of drivers used across the EVO5 range, chosen for their excellent rigidity and damping characteristics. Kevlar’s ability to deliver tight, fast and clean bass ensures that lower male vocals, musical scores and deep effects maintain presence without becoming muddy.
The bass response is tuned to provide weight and fullness without overwhelming the all-important midrange. It means that voices sound natural and grounded, while explosions, engine sounds and musical swells are rendered with believable scale.
AMT High-Frequency Precision
Perhaps the most defining characteristic of the EVO5.1 is its high-frequency performance, driven by Wharfedale’s true AMT (Air Motion Transformer) driver. Instead of using a traditional dome or cone, which push air forward, AMTs move air by squeezing it through a pleated diaphragm made of ultra-thin light weight polymer. Strong magnets are positioned on either side of the diaphragm, creating a powerful magnetic field. When an audio signal passes through the conductive traces, the diaphragm is energised, causing the pleats to contract and expand.
As the pleats move, they 'squeeze' and 'expand' the air between them, pushing it out in a highly efficient manner. This allows the AMT to move four times more air than a traditional dome tweeter of the same surface area, delivering lower distortion (since the diaphragm moves less) and faster transient response (owing to lower mass and minimal movement). It also produces a wider frequency range and excellent horizontal dispersion.
Seamless Integration with the EVO5 Series
The EVO5.C has been voiced to perfectly match the rest of the EVO5 lineup, ensuring seamless integration in a multi-channel setup. Whether you’re pairing it with the EVO5.1 or EVO5.2 bookshelf speakers or the EVO5.4 floorstanders, you’ll experience a smooth tonal match and coherent front soundstage that tracks seamlessly from left to right.
This matching across the range is essential for delivering a convincing home cinema experience. Panning effects feel more realistic, dialogue remains locked to the screen, and your overall immersion increases dramatically.
Placement and Compatibility
At 188mm high and 520mm wide, the EVO5.C is compact enough to fit on most AV furniture while still offering a full-bodied sound that can easily fill larger rooms. Rear bass ports assist with low-end reinforcement but benefit from a bit of breathing space to sound their best. Placement directly below the screen, angled slightly upward toward the listener, is ideal.
With a sensitivity of 89dB and nominal impedance of 8 ohms, the EVO5.C is easy to drive, making it compatible with a wide range of AV receivers and power amplifiers. It performs brilliantly with mid-range systems, but it also scales with higher-end electronics, revealing more depth and finesse as your system improves
Acoustic Cabinetry with Real Wood Finishes
Just like its siblings, the EVO5.C is housed in a beautifully curved cabinet made from multiple layers of wood. This construction method reduces internal resonances and standing waves, allowing the drivers to perform with greater accuracy. The curved profile is not just visually appealing, it also contributes to the clarity and neutrality of the sound.
The speaker is available in Black, Lunar Grey and White smooth matt finish and real wood veneer Walnut finish, all of which exude a high-end, furniture-grade aesthetic. It’s a speaker that looks as good as it sounds, blending easily into modern living spaces and dedicated home cinemas alike.
Our Review
In any home theatre, the centre speaker is arguably the most important component, and the Wharfedale EVO5.C lives up to the task. With its combination of cutting-edge driver technology, three-way architecture and refined voicing, it brings both subtlety and strength to your system.
Whether you're listening to dramatic dialogue, live concert vocals, or the full-bodied soundtracks of your favourite films, the EVO5.C handles it all with elegance and power. It’s a natural fit for serious home cinema lovers who demand both clarity and emotional connection.
