The Wharfedale Elysian 4R Floorstanding Loudspeakers

The Wharfedale Elysian 4R is built for listeners who want a truly commanding loudspeaker, with the scale, depth and dynamic ability to bring music to life in a big way. It's jewel 8.5-inch bass drivers deliver serious lower weight, while the dedicated mid-range and advanced AMT Tweeter preserve the detail, openness and natural balance expected from a high-end design. With its premium cabinet design, refined crossover and premium construction, the Elysian 4R is made to be both heard and felt.

What Are The Benefits Of The Wharfedale 4R's?

Elysian 4R builds on the strongest foundations of the original flagship Elysian design. Its purpose is simple: to deliver music with the scale, physicality and natural realism expected from a true high-end floorstanding loudspeaker.
The dual 8.5” bass drivers provide deep, controlled low-frequency authority, supported by Wharfedale’s Slot-Loaded Profiled Port system for extension, speed and reduced placement sensitivity. The dedicated midrange driver handles the crucial vocal and instrumental band with clarity and tonal accuracy, while the AMT treble unit brings openness, air and transient speed.
Generation R refinements elevate the system further. The crossover has been reworked with direct-path PCBs and premium components. Driver manufacturing has been tightened for greater consistency. Cabinet behaviour has been further optimised to reduce resonance and preserve acoustic transparency. Elysian 4R is not merely the largest model in the range. It is the statement model - built for listeners who want the full depth, power and refinement of Wharfedale’s flagship loudspeaker design.

Dual 8.5" Bass Drivers & Midrange

Large coated glass fibre matrix bass drivers provide deep extension, dynamic headroom and controlled impact.

The separate midrange unit preserves natural vocal tone, instrumental texture and spatial precision.
The bass and midrange drivers feature coated glass fibre matrix cones chosen for their strength, lightweight nature, and controlled damping. This ensures clear bass, natural midrange sound, and minimal coloration.

AMT Treble

The 27 x 90mm AMT delivers speed, extension and low-distortion high-frequency performance.
The ELYSIAN R AMT is engineered for speed, openness and precision. Its pleated diaphragm moves air with exceptional efficiency, giving the loudspeaker a sense of effortless detail and natural high-frequency extension.

The R Crossover

The Elysian R crossover features premium components such as high-silicon-iron-cored coils for bass, air-core coils for midrange and treble, Super Audiophile polypropylene capacitors, and low-inductance resistors. Innovative direct-path PCBs are designed to maintain signal clarity.

SLPP Bass Management

Wharfedale’s Slot-Loaded Profiled Port system improves bass extension and control, reduces turbulence, and lessens placement sensitivity. The result is bass that is powerful, fast, and consistent in usual listening settings.

New Finishes

Elysian 4R is available in Walnut High Gloss, Matte Black and Lunar Grey, with refined matte-black trim detailing and matching stand options for selected models.

Dual Binding Posts: The Elysian 3R floorstanding loudspeaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumper-straps. The binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors, & banana plugs (single only). Using these dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. Bi-wiring or bi-amping the speaker can provide improved bass & treble performance.

Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).

  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.
  • Note: If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

Mounting & Placement Options: If you are sitting within 2 metres of a pair of Elysian R Series speakers, the distance between the speakers should be the same as between you and the speakers. Otherwise sit the speakers between 1.5 and 2 metres apart, clear of rear walls and room corners. If the loudspeakers are placed too close to the walls the bass will increase but may be boomy and indistinct. If the loudspeakers are placed further away from the walls, the inward angle ("toe-in") may be increased by up to 30%. As personal taste and room acoustics play a large role, experiment with different configurations and play a wide range of music before finalising the position of the speakers.

The optimum listening position is in an area between the speakers broadly known as the "sweet spot". The more extreme the angle of toe-in the narrower the sweet spot. Wharfedale loudspeakers are designed to cover a wide sonic perspective so there should be no need for extreme settings. A mild angle inwards will cover a wide range of seating positions. The grilles are provided to protect the loudspeaker drive units from accidental damage. For critical listening, please remove the grilles.

Note: The spike feet will scratch floors. Be careful positioning the speaker on floorboards, tile or vinyl flooring. No rubber feet or pads are included to protect floors. We recommend using Quadraspire Floor Protectors or Atacama Spike Shoes to protect your floors.

Why Choose The Wharfedale Elysian 4R Floorstanding Speakers?

The Wharfedale ELYSIAN 4R Speakers are the top dog in the series. The biggest and best and for good reason. With dual 8.5-inch bass drivers, providing exceptional depth, impact and dynamic headroom. While the dedicated midrange and AMT tweeter maintain the clarity and detail needed for more delicate music. The result is a speaker capable of filling large rooms with effortless, powerful and immersive sound, making it the ideal choice for listeners who simply want the most complete Elysian R experience. About Wharfedale

Wharfedale Wireless Works was founded by Gilbert Briggs in 1932, soon after he built his very first loudspeaker in the cellar of his home in Ilkley, Yorkshire. This sleepy little market town was located in the valley of the river “Wharfe” – an area known to this day as ‘Wharfedale’. This unlikely location would ...
