Wharfedale Denton 1S Heritage Bookshelf Speakers

The new Denton 1S bookshelf speakers punch well above their size for such a compact cabinet. Getting the design cues from the Denton 80th and 85th anniversary models but evolving into a contemporary modern style. Delivering rich and engaging that will not disappoint.

A Classic Reimagined

First introduced in 1967, the original Denton was Wharfedale’s answer to a changing hi-fi landscape - a truly compact loudspeaker that delivered natural sound, fine craftsmanship, and outstanding value. The Denton 1 followed in 1974 with a new styling that challenged convention not only through its engineering, but also in its appearance, stepping away from the traditional wooden-box aesthetic in favour of a more utilitarian, forward-looking 'late modernist' design. That same spirit of reinvention defines the new Wharfedale Denton 1S.

The Denton 1S is not a simple revival. It is a clean-sheet reinterpretation of what a compact, modern hi-fi loudspeaker can be, combining contemporary acoustic engineering with unmistakable British design identity. Adopting a coaxial point-source architecture inspired by the original Denton 1, it delivers exceptional coherence and precision in a modern, compact, and purposeful form. Developed as an engineering challenge to explore new paths within Wharfedale loudspeaker design, the Denton 1S is playful yet technically serious, confident yet refined. It is also unmistakably contemporary while honouring Wharfedale’s enduring legacy.

Coaxial Precision: One Acoustic Centre

The brand-new coaxial driver is a sophisticated two-way system that positions a 25mm silk-dome tweeter concentrically within a 165mm advanced polypropylene cone. By allowing both drivers to radiate from a single acoustic centre, the Denton 1S achieves inherent time alignment and phase coherence.

The result is a remarkably unified presentation with stable stereo imaging, a wide, immersive soundstage and consistent tonal balance across a broad listening area. Whether seated centrally or listening off-axis, the Denton 1S delivers a smooth, coherent sound that belies its compact dimensions.

The coaxial configuration also enables a smaller, more rigid cabinet with minimal front-baffle interruption - enhancing structural integrity while contributing to the speaker’s clean, refined aesthetic.

Designed For Natural Musicality

Development of the Denton 1S was led by Wharfedale’s Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau, with particular focus on crossover integration.

Through extensive modelling and critical listening evaluation, the crossover network has been engineered to ensure the drivers operate as a single unified system rather than as separate components. The result is a loudspeaker that sounds natural, balanced, and free from tonal discontinuities.

Music flows with convincing timing and scale, preserving detail and dynamic expression without fatigue - qualities more often associated with significantly larger loudspeakers.

Denton 1S Big Sound, Compact Form

Despite its modest footprint, the Denton 1S delivers impressive low-frequency authority. Its carefully tuned bass reflex enclosure and optimised 11.5-litre internal volume enable bass extension down to 45Hz (-6dB) - exceptional performance for a compact standmount loudspeaker.

Bass is warm, textured, and controlled, while the enhanced polypropylene cone ensures fast transient response and low midrange colouration. This new cone material is developed to build upon Wharfedale’s longstanding driver fundamentals while introducing improved rigidity, low mass, and controlled self-damping characteristics. The result is a driver that combines natural tonal balance with excellent transient accuracy and reduced colouration across the critical midrange region.

High frequencies are smooth and detailed, aided by the silk-dome tweeter’s damped rear chamber and high-flux motor system. With 88dB sensitivity and a benign 8-ohm nominal impedance, the Denton 1S is easily driven by a wide range of amplifiers - making it a flexible partner for both classic hi-fi systems and modern integrated amplifiers.

Denton 1S Placement

The Denton 1S has been engineered for placement flexibility as well as acoustic performance. Primarily designed as a standmount loudspeaker, it also offers suitability for installed or on-wall applications. A discreet rear 3/8” mounting point allows secure wall installation.

A specially engineered rear-panel “Brilliance” EQ switch provides subtle tonal adjustment to optimise performance for free-space, shelf-mounted, or near-wall positioning. The Denton 1S adapts effortlessly to its environment - delivering balanced performance without dictating room layout.

Designed For Modern Living With A Contemporary Finish

Visually, the Denton 1S reinterprets Wharfedale Heritage for contemporary interiors.

Smooth cabinet curves, a luxurious matte paint finish, classic cloth grille, and retro-inspired badging blend past and present. Beneath this refined exterior lies advanced cabinet construction, incorporating multi-layer panels, internal bracing, and carefully controlled damping to suppress unwanted resonance. The result is a compact hi-fi speaker that feels both modern and unmistakably Wharfedale.

Wharfedale has long been recognised for class-leading cabinet craftsmanship, and the Denton 1S raises that standard once again.

Available in matte black, matte white, and an all-new matte blue finish, the Denton 1S is designed to complement contemporary living spaces. These modern finishes position the speaker confidently within today’s design-led interiors while preserving the unmistakable identity of the Denton lineage.

Why Choose The Wharfedale Denton 1S Speakers?

Love the idea of having a Wharfedale Heritage Speaker, but perhaps you don't have the room for them. The Wharfedale Denton 1S bookshelf speakers, have come to the party and designed for the more modern home, these speakers will look fabulous in most homes.

Wharfedale Lintons against wall in room

About Wharfedale

Wharfedale Wireless Works was founded by Gilbert Briggs in 1932, soon after he built his very first loudspeaker in the cellar of his home in Ilkley, Yorkshire. This sleepy little market town was located in the valley of the river “Wharfe” – an area known to this day as ‘Wharfedale’. This unlikely location would ...
