Theory Audio Design System 1 Plus
Our Theory system in Cinema 4 just got an upgrade and we’re pretty pleased with the results. But first, let us tell you a little bit about Theory Audio Design.
Theory are genuinely unique - their products have completely changed the level of performance attainable from small to medium size installed sound systems. Part of the way they attain this level of performance is by employing proprietary DSP techniques to process the signal for their loudspeakers and subwoofers with a very high degree of precision.
As such, the Theory ecosystem of products is a little different than what you're used to as all Theory loudspeaker models require the application of Theory High Resolution Digital Loudspeaker Processing. For this reason, it is best to think of Theory loudspeakers as "active" or "powered" speakers - Theory have just elected to place the electronics, normally installed inside the loudspeaker itself, in rack-mountable chasses, outside the harsh environment of the loudspeaker, and where wiring and service of the electronics can be accomplished painlessly.

For our installation we have specified a 5.2.2 system with three in-wall speakers for the front left, centre, right channels and two on-wall models for the surrounds. We then have two in-ceiling Dolby Atmos speakers and two in-wall 12” subwoofers. Previously we had a pair of 8 Channel amplifiers which have specialised DSP technology onboard to make sure all the Theory speakers sounded perfect. However, as is sometimes the case there were some amongst us who didn’t think the bass was quite as solid as it could be so we have now installed a dedicated amplifier just for the two subwoofers which means they now get 800 Watts per subwoofer which we think might just be enough to get the air moving in a suitable solid manner. This reduces the strain on the existing amplifiers and we also now have some of the best bass we’ve ever encountered in a modestly sized home theatre system. With the new amplification in place we are feeding the front left, centre and right speakers with 250 Watts each, the surrounds and in-ceiling Dolby Atmos speakers are receiving 125 Watts each and, as mentioned, the subwoofers are getting 800 Watts each. This adds up to a total of 2,850 Watts RMS for the complete system which, as Rolls Royce would say, is ‘adequate’.
All up, this has brought a level of performance never before imagined to this medium sized cinema room and nearly all of it is invisible. The AV preamp/processor of choice is the acclaimed Anthem AVM-70.
While this system sounds quite amazing as it is, if you are after an even more enveloping sound then we recommend you get a second pair of in-ceiling Dolby Atmos speakers for that full “you are right there in the middle of everything’ experience.
