About The Bowers & Wilkins 706 S3 Stand Mount Speakers
The 706 S3 is an outstanding stand mount loudspeaker for use in larger spaces. Thanks to its decoupled Carbon Dome tweeter and carefully upgraded crossover, it provides exceptional detail and insight into your music, while its substantial 165mm (6.5") Continuum Cone bass/midrange drive unit provides ample scale and extension. Like its 705 S3 sibling, it performs at its best on the optional FS700 S3 stand.
Carbon Dome Tweeters: Carbon Dome tweeters are purpose-built for the 700 Series. Delivering a dramatic improvement on the aluminium double dome tweeter, they raise the breakup threshold to 47kHz, for pinpoint imaging accuracy and detail.
Continuum™ Cone: Thanks to its composite construction, the Continuum™ cone avoids the abrupt transitions in behaviour that can impair the performance of a conventional drive unit. The result is a more open, neutral performance that delivers voices and instruments with precision and transparency.
Curved Baffle: The 700 S3 range features a curved front baffle for the first time. This allows the midrange and bass drivers to be located in individual pod-type housings that sit proud of the speaker baffle. When combined with the curvature of the structure, this advanced approach – derived from the 800 Series Diamond – reduces the audible impact of the cabinet, creating a cleaner, more open and more immersive sound.

Our Take
The middle child often gets overlooked but we think the middle 706 S3 model could just be the pick of the litter, especially at its attractive price point. The drive units used are exactly the same as the range topping 705 S3 except this time the tweeter is housed on the front baffle. The cabinet size is also the same so you get excellent dynamic drive from the Continuum Cone Bass/Midrange driver with a rear firing port rounding out the lower registers. Bass is full and satisfying for a small speaker, especially when used on the matching FS700 S3 stands filled with Atacama Atabites. However, if full range is important then we would recommend a subwoofer or two to round out the lower frequencies and provide an even bigger soundstage. This speaker sounds great on a wide range of musical styles and can pound out the bass beats on one track while sensitively illuminating shimmering strings on another. Vocals are handled in an appealing natural and lively way which will bring your favourite singers to life right there in your living room. As a good all-rounder the Bowers & Wilkins 706 S3 is a hard speaker to beat.
