About Wharfedale Diamond ST-1 Speaker Stands
The Wharfedale Diamond ST-1 Speaker Stands are specifically designed to make Diamond Stand Mount Speakers sound their best. However, they also suit many other speakers.
Wharfedale is proud to release a quality speaker stand to enhance the already exceptional sound quality of its wide range of bookshelf speakers. These aren't the cheapest stands but they're by no means the most expensive on the market. However, they are very well made and match the current and many previous Diamond series Bookshelf speakers perfectly. They do come with metal floor spikes and are supplied as an easy to assemble flatpack. And yes, it only takes a few minutes to put them together. They do not come supplied with Gel Packs - a special product made by Atacama - to place between your speakers and the stands. These can be added as an option along with "spike shoes" if you have timber or tiled floors.
A well deigned and constructed speaker stand is required to raise the high frequency drivers of bookshelf speakers to ear level for ideal vertical dispersion, couple the speaker to the floor to drain away vibrations of any kind and decouple the speaker from the floor to prevent any vibration feedback from contaminating the audio chain. The Diamond Stand serves all purposes thereby resulting in an almost holographic soundstage and exceptionally wide dynamic range.
Why Do You Need Speaker Stands?
That question is often quickly followed up with another: "Can't they just sit on the floor?" The truth is you can put the speakers wherever you like but the location and positioning absolutely and significantly affect performance. When bookshelf sized speakers are placed on the floor or against a wall their sonic output becomes 'connected' to the floor or walls. This results in sound that is muddy, distorted and lacking in clarity. Speaker stands elevate and isolate speakers from floors and walls. Sound is clearer and cleaner with much better imaging and a greater sense of realism.
How To Make Stands Even Better
Where appropriate - like here with the Wharfedale Diamond Stands - the centre post/tubes are hollow and the larger one can be 'filled' to further dampen vibrations, help minimise unwanted resonances and as a bonus extra, provide added stability. The only way we have found successful is to use lead shot available from most gun shops. At about $8 per kilo it is a tad expensive, but you don't need to fill them to the top. We would recommend between 5kg and 6kg per stand unless you have a heap more just lying around! Another suggestion has been to use washed 5mm aggregate. You may have other solutions and that is fine as long as whatever you use will not react with the metal.
