About the Wharfedale Diamond 11.3

The Wharfedale Diamond 11.3 is the entry-level floor-standing model in the ever developing 11 series of loudspeakers and has just had a mini update (May 2020) to make it sound even better. You won't be doing yourself any disfavours by checking out the 11 series range or even buying on reputation alone. All models are what we call "amplifier-friendly" or put simply will work well with the majority of brand name amplifiers.

Wharfedale Diamond 11 has continued innovative acoustic technology with superb aesthetics which make the series fresh and visually exciting. For almost 30 years, Wharfedale’s famous Diamond speakers have served as the classic entry point to true high-fidelity sound, their exceptional value for money earning dozens of awards around the globe. Now, with the introduction of the Diamond 11 Series, Wharfedale has again raised the bar for affordable, high-performance loudspeakers.

Wharfedale Diamond 11.3 Speakers

Cabinets:The concept of curved cabinet walls for strength, the reduction of cabinet flex and internal standing waves, has been retained from the Diamond 9 and 10 Series with strong side walls. This has been made possible through a superior method of bonding and curving the panels, increasing rigidity and, aided by internal bracing, reducing the audible effects of panel resonance. Along with the stronger cabinet, the bass driver which has a chassis formed from strong nylon-filled homopolymer, has been given a massive flange secured to the cabinet with six screws to improve stability. The front baffle has a composite panel structure to reduce vibration. The enclosures are stuffed full with poly-fill (a tontine like material) that improves bass and midrange performance.

Kevlar Cone: The discerning consumer will also note the diamond pattern moulded into the surround of the woven Kevlar cone - Kevlar is a synthetic aramid fibre, manufactured by DuPont®, and probably best known for its use in bulletproof vests. Indeed, those same mechanical properties of strength and the ability to dissipate the energy of a bullet also have benefits for speaker cones. On the Diamond 11 Series this is not just cosmetic. The pattern reduces and damps undesirable 'standing-waves' in the driver surround thus yielding a cleaner high-frequency roll-off.

Low Profile Chassis: The open nature of the chassis reduces reflection from rear cone movements, allowing air to move freely through the driver, which in turn results to an overall even response with a much lower distortion. Formed from a high density, injection-moulded polymer pioneered by Wharfedale, the chassis itself provides substantial damping of ring waves.

Offset Bi-Wire Terminals:Utilising the same familiar offset terminal block as with its predecessors, the gold-plated contact areas and bridging strips allow firm connections with the best possible connectivity, whilst the offset pattern provides allowance for heavy duty cables and a wider range of cable connection options.

About Wharfedale: Although the Diamond series is wholly made in China, the design is still all done in-house in Britain. Frankly, they couldn't afford to make them over there and still sell at a competitive price. However IAG in China has proven that they can deliver top-notch quality. In addition to Wharfedale, they also manufacture other marquee brands including Audiolab, Ekco, Luxman, Mission and Quad and all to uncompromising standards.

Summary:This is a 2.5 Way, 3 Driver floorstanding model with a bottom firing port which allows the speaker to deliver more bass than it's size would normally permit. It also means the speakers can sit closer to a rear wall unlike rear-firing enclosures that can experience "chuffing" when placed to close to a wall. Use any of the 11 series to create a stereo music or home theatre haven in your living space. They come supplied with floor spikes which we highly recommend you install. If you have timber or tile floors, we can supply for a small extra charge Atacama Spike Shoeswhich will give the floors the necessary protection.

Our Take On The 11.3 Speakers

The latest evolution of this classic speaker range builds upon the success of its multi-award-winning predecessors but with numerous enhancements. The Wharfedale 11.3 delivers all the hard-hitting bass you'd expect from a tower, thanks to its powerful 165mm bass/mid drivers. The midrange is where the real musical action is invariably found, and a smooth midband is an invaluable loudspeaker quality. The use of Kevlar in the Diamond 11.3's definitely contributes to the overall harmony. The result is a sound that’s crisp, focused and spacious, effortlessly dynamic yet firmly in control. They aren't an efficient design so do need an amp or receiver with grunt. Not necessarily high-wattage although that's OK, but definitely a high-current design. When you add the visual appeal of the elegantly curved cabinets, it is clear that the new Diamond 11 series is a sparkling jewel in Wharfedale’s crown.
