Product Description

Wharfedale’s Diamond 11.1 speakers need little introduction, with nearly three decades of audio supremacy heritage. The Diamond series has received numerous international awards and over 1 million pairs sold worldwide.

Wharfedale Diamond is arguably 'THE' most recognisable name in hi-fi. Diamond Series 11 takes the tried and tested formula and superb aesthetics and refines or tweaks the design which all make the series fresh and visually exciting.

You've heard the hyperboles: A certain product is touted better than those costing three times as much and possesses technological details nobody but the designers understand. All this from manufacturers that have been in business just a few years. We sympathise with your skepticism. So does Wharfedale.

In his press release, Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau said: "When Wharfedale launched the very first Diamond in 1981, the company defined a new class of speaker that delivered genuine hi-fi accuracy and musical brio at a remarkably affordable price. Since then, every iteration of the famous Diamond line has adhered to that tradition but improved upon it. With the Diamond 11 series we started afresh, taking established Diamond design features like Kevlar bass/mid cones and the slot-loaded distributed port system and incorporating them into redesigned speakers superior in every way from the cabinets, to the drive units, to the crossover...These speakers draw the listener into the musical performance in a way normally expected only from models at considerably higher price levels, embodying the traditional Wharfedale attribute of being great all-rounders across various music types. Add the elegantly curved and immaculately finished cabinets and we are proud to have created a range of speakers that delivers premium quality at remarkably affordable prices – entirely fitting with Wharfedale’s 85-year legacy.”

Our friends at Wharfedale in England have taken the most advanced and enjoyable features found in the previous generations of its Diamond speakers, made a few internal changes to the crossover and kept the overall "package" with lots of market appeal. This incredible value model offers tightly focused sound, a wide and deep soundstage and an extended, transparent delivery. Don't judge this speaker by its modest size. Whether playing classic-rock favourites or mellow jazz, the 11.1 exhibits spacious dynamics and astute control no matter the program material. It begs to be placed in an office, den, bedroom, porch, lounge, or modest-sized listening room--anywhere you want to hear rich, involving sound.

Enhancements Focus on Delivering Best-Possible Sound Quality: How does Wharfedale do it? Improving on past award-winning designs, the 11.1 features a soft-dome tweeter custom-made to present clear, high frequency ranges up to 20kHz. A 130mm (5") Kevlar bass driver and Rectilinear Bass Reflex (slot loaded) port bring up the bottom end and yield tremendous punch. Other features, ranging from a low-profile chassis to strong cabinet walls and a composite front-baffle panel, all contribute to reduced vibration, lower distortion, and increased rigidity. Lets look at these enhancements more closely.

Stronger Cabinet Walls: The concept of curved cabinet walls, for strength and the reduction of internal standing waves, was first introduced many years ago in the Diamond 9 Series. However, these walls have been made stronger through a superior method of bonding and curving the panels, increasing rigidity and, aided by internal bracing, reducing the audible effects of panel resonance.

Composite Front Baffle Panel: The front baffle features a composite panel structure with a piano-black finish. This contributes to the speaker’s smart look, but more importantly to its improved sound quality. It reduces the effects of vibration and provides a stable material or base for the drive units.

The Mid/Bass Drive Unit: To make the most of this strong cabinet, the main drive unit chassis has been enhanced with a massive flange that is secured using six (hiden) screws, thus improving its stability. A diamond pattern has also been moulded into the surround of the Kevlar cone; this is more than just cosmetic as the pattern reduces and damps standing waves in the surround, yielding a cleaner high-frequency acoustic roll-off and enhancing the ability of the mid/bass unit and tweeter to work as a cohesive whole.

Gorgeous Finishes and Elegant Curves: Visually, the Diamond 11.1 practically disappears into its surrounding environment. Even when you might notice it, you'll adore the elegantly curved cabinets and gorgeous finishes and equally striking colours. The compact form extends to functionality. On the back the parallel terminals allow easy connection of bare wire, spade terminals or 4mm "banana" plugs.

Your Decision Made Easier: Satisfaction is Guaranteed: Still debating your decision? Audio Trends fully realises that this speaker category is quite possibly the most-competitive field in audio. Breathe easier knowing that we promise your satisfaction with our 14-Day Money-Back Guarantee. We honestly don't think you'll be sending back your 11.1s once you hear them. If anything, you might find yourself ordering more pairs to place throughout your house. They're that addictive. And that good. Call us or simply order from our Web site to get your Diamond 11.1s on their way!

In The News

"Within the opening few bars of the title track from Faithless’s Reverence, it’s clear that the true talent of the Diamond 11.1s lies in their gloriously insightful midrange. Maxi Jazz’s voice has texture far beyond what Wharfedale’s competitors are able to convey and there’s graininess to the track’s guitar hook that other speakers at this price make sound clean if not clinical. Forward to Don’t Leave and the sample of crackling vinyl could be coming straight from a dusty record on a turntable, the room mics clearly audible in the vocal; Salva Mea’s iconic bubbling synth hook is not only articulate but unearths the tonal differences in its echoed counterparts." - What HiFi?

Our Take

Obviously, we like Wharfedale speakers. They have been a part of our "journey" for over 50 years and continue to impress each and everyone of our staff members who are both audio and music enthusiasts. As mentioned in the Wharfedale blurb, the latest generation of Diamond speakers includes design elements never previously seen at such affordable price points. Wharfedale’s engineers went back to basics to create a loudspeaker system that would once again revolutionise this sector of the hi-fi market and bring high-end performance – and style – at a very competitive price and yet nothing is "built-down" to a price. The Diamond 11 Series sports advanced driver systems incorporating elements that normally only find their way into high-end loudspeakers so that makes us very excited about the product.
Compatibility? They will work well with any quality brand of amplifier delivering at least 35 Watts RMS per channel. Source material can likewise be from the analogue or digital domain. Room size. These are best suited to smaller (Australian standaard) listening environments or when you can be seated around 3 to 4 metres away. They need to be off the floor and preferably on speaker stands. The wire connectors allow for good quality cable - from QED 79 strand and up - as well as 4mm banana plugs.
