About the Sony VPL-VW790ES 4K Projector
Sony's VPL-VW790ES SXRD 4K projector is the model in the range that has been given the laser treatment so you don’t have to worry about pesky lamp changes for years to come. The ‘790 also features some truly cutting edge processing tech to produce eyeball popping visuals that make this a serious contender for a top flight home theatre system. The level of detail, contrast and clarity on its 4096 x 2160 8.8 million pixel display is almost otherworldly.
As you might guess, Audio Trends is full of ‘Tech Heads’, and we love technology products that break the boundaries. The secret to the performance of the Sony's VPL-VW790ES is the fact it doesn’t use a lamp, of any kind, to produce the light needed to throw images onto your screen. Oh, no the VPL-VW790ES uses a laser light source instead. This means that there is no need to do the dreaded countdown to your next lamp change because this projector’s light source isn’t measured in hours, but in years, meaning you can sit comfortably back and just enjoy the show, without a care in the world.
The Sony VPL-VW790ES has been given a serious upgrade that offers an incredibly clear HDR experience by implementing new picture processor “X1™ for projector”, based on technology used for Sony’s best-in-class TVs.
Sony’s Unique Super Resolution “Reality Creation” Technology: X1™ for projector analyses each scene to enrich 4K content and real-world detail and texture. Even content filmed in 2K or Full HD is upscaled close to 4K. Resolution of each subject is then optimised to reproduce real-world textures.
Dynamic HDR Enhancer: Due to the processing power of the newly installed X1™ for projector chip, more detailed analysis is performed and HDR enhancement power has become stronger compared to previous models. This new HDR feature analyses each scene to deliver the best contrast performance when viewing HDR content, making the bright scenes brighter and the dark scenes darker. The dynamic range of contrast and brightness is further expanded by linking with the laser and iris.
Digital Focus Optimiser: This new technology improves focus level by compensating optical degradation of the lens to offer corner-to-corner clarity.
A Closer Look
The VPL-VW790ES is a true 4K projector. What do we mean by "true"? We mean that the 'VW790ES's picture has 8.8 million pixels, to accurately reveal the tiniest details and subtlest textures in 4K sources. By comparison, pixel-shifting "4K-compatible" models typically have around 4 million pixels. Full 4K creates that 3-dimensional "looking-through-a-window" sense of realism.
Sony's Powerful Hollywood-Honed Video Processing: The VPL-VW790ES's 4K Ultra HD projection system has four times the detail of 1080p and is based on the same 4K Digital Cinema SXRD technology used in Sony's professional projectors. (But even Sony's expensive cinema projectors haven't made the switch to laser yet.
The VPL-VW790ES has another ace up its sleeve — its powerful Reality Creation video processing is based on Sony's years of experience upscaling movies to 4K in thousands of theatres worldwide. You can select the amount of Reality Creation processing to be applied to each video source. The improvement is easily visible on everything from Blu-ray discs to streamed Netflix® movies to cable TV feeds.
How Do You Improve On 4K? Add HDR: Our eyes can see a much wider range of contrast and colour than current TVs can display — even most 4K Ultra HD models. So, while 4K provides more pixels, TV makers are introducing new technologies to deliver better pixels that produce more vivid, colourful, and lifelike images.
The most important of these technologies is HDR (High Dynamic Range), which significantly expands the picture contrast range with both deeper blacks and brighter highlights. HDR gives colours more pop, too. The VPL-VW790ES's laser light source and real-time laser light control can deliver truly spectacular HDR effects. This light controller behaves like a dynamic iris on a lamp-based projector, precisely adjusting light output on the fly, to optimize both dark and bright scenes.
A growing amount of streamed video content encoded with HDR information is already available, and Ultra HD Blu-ray players and discs have really taken off. The VPL-VW790ES has two Ultra-HD-ready HDMI inputs with maximum bandwidth of 18 Gbps, making this one of the most future-ready projectors we know of. Even as 4K content is released with higher frame rates and colour bit depths, this projector will be able to display it in all its glory.
Banish Blur With Motionflow: The larger the image, the more challenging it is to maintain a smooth, clear picture during fast-paced onscreen action. Sony's Motionflow is one of the most sophisticated and refined blur-reduction technologies available, and the VPL-VW790ES has their most advanced version yet. This is Sony's only consumer-grade projector with Motionflow processing for 4K video sources.
Flexible Setup For Rooms Large And Small: Although Sony describes this as a "compact" projector, it is one of the largest and heaviest model we sell. When you get into this price range, many customers will opt for professional installation, but Sony did design the VPL-VW790ES to be fairly easy to install and set up. It features a powered zoom lens and powered lens shift for adjusting the image either horizontally or vertically, to allow for off-centre projector placement. Sony recommends a maximum screen size of 300", but you'll also get amazing results with screens sized 100" or less.
Out-of-the-box picture settings are so spot on, you'll be tempted to leave them as-is. But if you like to tweak, you can fine-tune brightness, contrast, and colour to suit a wide range of rooms, screens, and video sources.
A New Visual Landmark: Discover all the emotion of cinematic entertainment in true 4K HDR. Eexperience the cinema-quality entertainment you’ve always dreamed of. The beautifully styled VPL-VW790ES represents a new landmark in home cinema technology, achieving extraordinary levels of picture performance that you’d expect from a bigger, more costly projector. The long-lasting laser light source delivers a powerful 2,000 lumen output for exceptional images, even in larger home cinema rooms and well-lit living spaces. Laser light levels are precisely controlled in real time, assuring truly spectacular dynamic contrast range with the latest 4K HDR content.
Enjoy All Your Content In 4K: While more native 4K material is becoming available, the VPL-VW790ES uses Reality Creation technology that upscales Full HD content for an incredible 4K experience. You’ll get the best from your current Blu-ray Disc™ library and video streaming services – with extraordinary clarity, colour and contrast.
4K Native Resolution: Over Four Times More Detail Than Full HD: Don’t compromise with true 4K (4096 x 2160 pixel) resolution, the standard used in the digital cinema industry. You’ll find the same SXRD panel technology used in Sony’s professional projectors, producing 4K native pictures with no artificial pixel enhancement.
Advanced 4K SRXD Panels: The VPL-VW790ES automatically adjusts contrast for optimum picture quality by analysing dark and light areas in every scene. Advanced SXRD panel technology features a highly reflective liquid crystal layer and an alignment layer without bevelled corners or contact divots, enabling an ultra-fast response rate of just 2.5 milliseconds. Space is minimised between adjacent pixels for dot-free pictures with deep contrast.
Motionflow For Smoother, More Natural Images: The VPL-VW790ES uses Motionflow technology to insert additional picture frames, in both Full HD and 4K, reducing blur in fast-paced action scenes. Combination mode creates additional dark frames to reduce blur for more natural motion. Great for movie purists, True Cinema mode maintains the original 24p frame rate.
Compatible With High Dynamic Range (HDR10, HLG): Enjoy movies and streaming services in 4K HDR with a far wider range of brightness levels, from sparkling highlights to rich, deep blacks. Whatever you’re watching, you’ll enjoy a more lifelike entertainment experience with extremely high contrast, exquisite colour and fine detail.
Extremely High Dynamic Contrast: Laser light levels are precisely controlled in real time, achieving an exceptionally high dynamic contrast ratio of ∞:1. Fine shadow detail is revealed in dark scenes, without compromising reproduction of bright scenes for truly captivating images.
Low Latency Mode: Great for gamers, low latency mode minimises input lag for speedy on-screen responses, even when you’re playing the latest 4K titles.
Support For The Latest Picture Standards: The VPL-VW790ES can project 4K content at up to 60 frames per second, the latest 4K industry standard that’s much higher than the earlier 24p. The result is smoother, more realistic images, especially with fast-paced action. And with support for HDCP 2.2, you’re future-proofed to make the most of today’s premium 4K releases – and tomorrow’s.
Rear Fan Exhaust: Air intakes at the front of the projector are matched by a rear air exhaust for the low-noise fan, ensuring optimum picture quality
Industry Standard RF 3D Compatible: A built-in RF transmitter synchronises with any RF 3D glasses for wider coverage, greater stability, and there’s no need for an external transmitter.
Reality Creation: Upscales Your Movies To 4K: As well as native 4K material, you can see your current Full HD Blu-ray or DVD movie collection upscaled for a 4K experience. Reality Creation is a technology that radically enhances Full HD content, even upscaling 3D movies for 4K.
Compatible With 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs: Enjoy ‘Mastered in 4K’ Blu-ray Discs upscaled from 2K to 4K pixel resolution, faithfully reproducing the detail and colour range of the original 4K master.
Wider Zoom & Shift Lens: A 2.06 motorised zoom lens and wide lens shift range of up to 85% vertical and 31% horizontal gives greater installation flexibility – even when the ceiling is very high.
Suitable For Home Automation: The VPL-VW790ES is compatible with many home automation systems, including Crestron Connected and Control4 SDDP. It offers an RS232 interface, RJ45 control and IR-IN terminal.
Manual Colour Correction: Precisely adjust gamma plus hue, saturation and brightness for each colour to create exactly the picture you want.
TRILUMINOS Display: Sony’s advanced TRILUMINOS Display technology reproduces a much broader colour range, reproducing more tones and textures than standard projectors. You’ll see the difference with greater colour purity, depth and realism in every scene.
Auto Calibration: After extended operating periods, colour can be automatically calibrated to match the original factory settings. There’s no need for special calibration equipment: you’ll enjoy consistent colours with every performance.
HDCP 2.2 Compatible: The VPL-VW790ES is ready for premium 4K content, including TV, internet streamed productions and satellite broadcasts.
Sit Closer: With 4K resolution, you can sit closer to the screen without compromising depth and realism. The best viewing position for 4K is at a distance of approximately 1.5 times the height of the projector screen (PH), compared to 3 times the height of the screen for Full HD.
Electronic Panel Alignment: Ensures the red and blue elements in each pixel are precisely positioned against green. Adjustments can be made by as little as 0.1 pixels for optimum clarity. (NB we recommend adjustments are made when the projector is warm).
Wireless Option (Up To Full HD 60p): Free yourself from cables and keep things tidy with an optional wireless HDMI emitter/receiver kit. The VPL-VW790ES can wirelessly connect to your games console, Blu-ray Disc player and more, and upscales for a 4K experience with Reality Creation.
USB Updates: To get the best from your projector, the VPL-VW790ES has USB ports to automatically receive the latest firmware updates, directly to the projector.
The VPL-VW790ES 4K Projector is a smart choice for the serious movie watcher or for those who want one of the industry best products. By any standard it is a state-of-the-art home theatre projector and is as close as you can get to having a commercial product at home but for a fraction of the price. The three SXRD image chips, one each for red, green, and blue, produce extraordinarily rich, saturated colours that are truly delightful.
The VPL-VW790ES is not the first 4K projector we've carried but it is currently the absolute last word in 4K Ultra HD Projectors and currently represents the very state of the art in projected images for your home. In other words, it doesn't get any better than this. So, if your wallet's deep enough, the VPL-VW790ES is THE projector of choice if it's the absolute best you're after. Enough said ...
