About Klipsch RP-500M Bookshelf Speakers

The Klipsch RP-500M is a great compact speaker capable of high output with little or no distortion. As per the Klipsch tradition, they are very efficient. A good quality 60 Watt per channel amplifier will make front row "concert-like" sound levels. Their strength is in the clean crisp highs and mid bass punch, with a nice low frequency presence.

Klipsch RP-500M Bookshelf Speakers

This affordably-priced bookshelf speaker model is another stand-out in Klipsch's Reference Premiere Series. They boast a 133mm (5.25") woofer - cones made out of specially treated aluminium that's strong yet lightweight to dampen and prevent distortion - plus Klipsch's signature 25mm (1") titanium dome horn tweeter for crisp, extended, highs.

With the Reference Premiere Series, Klipsch also gave these woofers a newly developed titanium voice coil former that allows more linear movement for enhanced efficiency, lower distortion, and extended low frequency response. Look around the back, and you'll see that instead of the conventional round port tube found on many speakers, Klipsch uses a Tractrix horn-shaped opening for smoother, more efficient airflow in and out of the cabinet. The resulting decrease in air turbulence makes for cleaner, more powerful bass with reduced port noise and low-frequency distortion. They can handle up to 75 Watts RMS and 300 Watts of peak power although remember these figures are the maximum and must be delivered without any distortion!

90°x 90° Silicon Composite Hybrid Tractrix Horns: A redesigned Tractrix Horn utilises a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The compressed moulded rubber construction adds high frequency damping to reduce harshness and improve detail. This creates the cleanest, most natural sound possible. These 90° x 90° Hybrid Tractrix Horns provide a wider sweet spot while maintaining controlled directivity of the sound.

Horn loading maximises efficiently and increases detail while focusing high frequencies towards the listening area. Proprietary Tractrix® geometry provides the most efficient transfer of high frequency waves into the listening area. The phase plug and compressed molded silicon face ensure smooth frequency response.

Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) Titanium Diaphragm Tweeters: Behind the Tractrix Horn lies a 25mm (1") titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound. The Linear Travel Suspension minimises distortion for enhanced, detailed performance. The new vented tweeter housing reduces standing waves that create unwanted harmonics, resulting in enhanced detail and clarity in high frequency reproduction.

Cerametallic Woofers: The woofers of the RP-500M bookshelf/standmount loudspeaker features Klipsch's distinctive, copper-coloured Cerametallic material. Made with an anodised aluminium, this cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodising process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range The woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability. When paired with the Tractrix horn-loaded LTS tweeter, it provides the highest speaker efficiency in its class.

Crossover Network: The speaker's crossover network is constructed using extremely high-quality components including top-of-the-line internal wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and an air-core inductor to ensure signal purity and proper driver integration. The speaker's enhanced crossover frequencies offer smoother on-axis and off-axis integration.

Bass Reflex MDF Enclosure: The RP-500M employs a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing Tractrix port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. Utilising Tractrix geometry, the all new Reference Premiere bass port allows for the most efficient, fastest air transfer from the cabinet for a clean, powerful low frequency response. The ported enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with a premium wood-grain polymer veneer and a polymer front baffle. The speaker's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimise panel vibrations that can colour sound.

Stands: The RP-500M is a compact speaker and is designed to be located on appropriate speakers stands (500mm - 700mm high) or on a bookshelf - and preferably with some type of "isolation" accessories to minimise resonance. No speaker in this category is designed to sit on the floor.

About Klipsch

Not many manufacturers can boast that they have been producing speakers for over 50 years, make the best selling speaker in the United States and in 1997 have their founder inducted into the Engineering and Science Hall of Fame, an honour shared by Thomas Edison, George Washington Carver and the Wright brothers! The Engineering and Science Hall of Fame recognizes those who have improved the quality of the human condition through an individual contribution using engineering and scientific principles. Klipsch can claim all of the above! But who was Mr. Klipsch or PWK to his friends?

Paul Wilbur Klipsch (PWK) was an American audio pioneer, a true eccentric and a proud member of the engineering and science hall of fame. He gave rise to speaker technologies that would forever impact generations of music lovers. It all started in a tiny tin shed in Hope, Arkansas way back in 1946  when PWK, genius, madman and maverick, designed and hand-built the legendary Klipschorn® speaker with the goal of bringing live music into his living room. In the understatement of the century, we'd say he succeeded. The tin shed is now a full-fledged factory with its own cabinet production line and the company’s headquarters have moved to Indianapolis, Indiana; however, the mission remains to create the world's best speakers.

PWK received a patent on his loudspeaker design in 1945, registered the name Klipsch & Associates in 1946 and began making each loudspeaker with his own two hands until he hired his first employee in 1948. Paul believed in four principles that continue to drive the design of every new Klipsch speaker, today and hopefully tomorrow. High Efficiency: Klipsch utilizes horn-loaded technology in each of its speaker categories, minus headphones and subwoofers, because the horn shape results in accurate and dynamic sound transmission. Low Distortion: Klipsch horn technology reproduces the softest sounds with remarkable clarity and detail and the loudest sounds with no harshness or distortion. Controlled Directivity: Klipsch horn technology assists in accurately directing sound, which, in turn, creates a more lifelike soundstage. Flat Frequency Response: These stunningly accurate speakers offer no unnatural highs, mids or lows, delivering sound as the artist intended.

Our Take On Klipsch RP-500M Speakers

Klipsch speakers deliver a dynamic and fast sound which is nothing less than impressive whether playing music or movies. If you demand good performance from a very small speaker, good luck finding anything that will top these, regardless of price point. When coupled with even a compact subwoofer, you get amazing full soundstage experience, even in a medium to large room. With a good sub from either Klipsch or SVS you will probably have more than enough foundation shaking bass to "tick off the family."
