Product Description

The Yamaha RX-A780 AV Receiver is the entry point in the AVENTAGE line-up but you wouldn't know it by looking at the amazing list of features. New tricks include Amazon Alexa voice activation and the option to add wireless rear speakers via Yamaha Musiccast. The RX-A780 delivers exhilarating home theatre while multi-zone flexibility ensures versatile home entertainment.

Overview

For sure, the RX-A780 has a very impressive list of features. But audio quality has not been sacrificed. The Yamaha AVENTAGE line of high-performance A/V Receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and highly accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonising traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality, from materials and parts to construction, layout, vibration damping (unique fifth foot) and “fine-tuning” the sound, is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every AVENTAGE model has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound, so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.

DTS:X: The Yamaha RX-A780 features DTS:X which is the next generation object-based, multi-dimensional audio technology from DTS. Unbound from channels, DTS:X conveys the fluid movement of sound to create an incredibly rich, realistic and immersive soundscape - in front of, behind, beside and above the audience - more accurately than ever before. The combination of DTS:X and Yamaha AV receivers will fill the room with multidimensional sound that makes you feel as if you are right in the middle of the story unfolding on the screen.

Dolby Atmos: The Yamaha RX-A780 A/V receiver is the first model in the series to have Dolby Atmos circuitry. This is no gimmick and the sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill your home theatre space with astonishing clarity, power, detail and depth. The RX-A780 has the processing power to run a more enveloping 5.2.2 channel Dolby Atmos layout utilising ceiling mounted, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. A 5.2.2 speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.1 speaker layout complemented by two overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers that will deliver exquisite sound quality. Of course the receiver also has 'traditional' Dolby and DTS surround sound decoding formats.

MusicCast: This is big news and a real point of difference between Yamaha and every other manufacturer. MusicCast is a new revolution in network audio and makes it super easy to create a whole house audio system starting with the RX-A780. MusicCast employs a high performance wireless network by using your home's existing Wi-Fi router to deliver music and audio enjoyment to multiple components in multiple rooms...and easily. There are no extra "devices" to purchase to make it work thus saving you money and time. MusicCast can stream digital music content from your smartphone, PC or NAS drive to other MusicCast devices in your home including soundbars and wireless speakers. It can also share the music from external devices such as a TV or CD player connected to the RX-A780. Audio content from Bluetooth-connected devices can also be streamed to MusicCast devices in multiple rooms. Use all your MusicCast products together or separately, it’s completely up to you. Control it all from Yamaha's free MusicCast App for Apple iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 4.1+. that has been designed to be intuitive, quick and simple to use. Use a soundbar, a wireless speaker, an AV Receiver, HiFi audio whichever suits you best, mix and match then expand your MusicCast system as time goes on. All new from Yamaha, the MusicCast system brings everything to everywhere for everyone. Click here to see the full-range of compatible MusicCast products.

Other Features

Australian buyers are still avid fans of radio and Yamaha have taken a great leap forward by upgrading the basic AM/FM tuner to a DAB+/FM tuner. For those living in a DAB radio broadcast zone (selected areas only) you will enjoy superior sound on ALL stations including those that also transmit on the AM band. Typically there are around 40 stations broadcasting in Australia on the DAB+ network. Of course the FM band is still included. What if you don't have either or the radio quality is poor? Simply stream your favourite stations over the Internet. Click here to learn more about radio issues and alternate solutions.

Additional new features on the '780 include Amazon Alexa Voice Control; Dolby Vision; MusicCast Wireless Rear Speaker capability (speakers sold separately) and 2.1 channel output which allows you to add a stereo power amplifier.

Wi-Fi Offers A Wide Range Of Wireless Music Options: If you've never connected a receiver to your wireless home network, you may not realize how much music you're missing out on. Built-in Wi-Fi makes the RX-A780 a snap to integrate with your network. Once you're connected, you can listen to free Pandora® Internet radio as well as free radio streams from hundreds of stations around the world. If you're a subscriber to Spotify or Rhapsody, you can enjoy their seemingly endless music choices. Got a computer or networked hard drive loaded with music? DLNA compatibility allows this receiver to tap into your collection wirelessly, so you never have to touch another CD again. Finally, if you're an Apple user, AirPlay lets you listen wirelessly from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or a computer running iTunes.

DLNA + WiFi Direct: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A780 AV receiver supports music streaming from WiFi-enabled devices (via WiFi Direct) and DLNA certified devices (via your home network). Supported music files include; MP3, WMA, AAC, ALAC, AIFF, FLAC and WAV (up to 192kHz) and DSD (2.4/5 MHz).

WiFi Direct: When using WiFi Direct  you can connect directly with other WiFi-enabled devices without using a wireless router. You can wirelessly stream a variety of music files to the RX-A780 without connecting to your home network. WiFi Direct completely bypasses your WiFi access point/router, so it's easy to set up. You'll continue to navigate your music and view song/artist information from your mobile device.

DLNA Certified: The RX-A780 is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 and Windows 7/8 compliant for audio networking. This means it's easy to access and enjoy digital music stored on your PC over your home network. You can use your PC to play high-bit rate music content through your audio system, or use the RX-A780 to browse and play music files on your hard drive. You can control playback of your streamed audio files from the AV receiver's remote control. The receiver also supports ID3-Tag and META tag information so song title, artist name, and album name can be displayed from the unit's on-screen menu (via HDMI). The AV receiver supports the following DLNA music servers - (1) PC with Windows Media Player 11 or later installed, (2) PC with DLNA/UPnP Certificate server software installed, (3) NAS with DLNA/UPnP certification.

Great Sound For One Or Two Rooms: One of the benefits of the 'A780's seven-channel amplifier is powering speakers in multiple rooms. There are a total of nine speaker outputs on this receiver. That means you can connect a 7.2-channel system in your home theatre and still have two more speaker outputs left over. Run wire to a set of stereo speakers in a bedroom, kitchen, or porch. Then let Yamaha's Intelligent Amp Assign do the rest. When you're watching a movie in your home theatre, the whole family can enjoy immersive 7.2 surround sound. But if you decide you'd rather chill out on the deck and listen to music, you can activate Zone 2, which automatically reassigns the surround back channels in the home theatre to the channels that power your outdoor speakers. Your family will still enjoy 5.2-channel surround sound for their movie while you're listening to music over your network.

Easy Control With Your Smartphone Or Tablet: What's the best way to control this receiver's many features? Download the free Yamaha AV Controller app to your smartphone or tablet. Available for Apple or Android™, the app offers easy touchscreen control of the receiver's most critical functions — from switching sources and controlling the volume, to multi-zone playback control and selecting an Internet radio station.

Built On Sound Principles: Excellent sound quality is the guiding principle behind Yamaha's AVENTAGE receivers. Low-jitter PLL circuitry reduces timing jitter from digital sources, for accurate playback and precise stereo imaging. The aluminium front panel and extra center foot on the receiver's base help to further eliminate unwanted resonance and distortion. And the high-quality Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converters decode the latest audio formats with accuracy and detail, so digital sources like Blu-ray discs and high-resolution music files sound their best.

Don't Forget About Picture Quality: Great-sound is only part of the AVENTAGE RX-A780's story. Video upconversion can take analog or HDMI-connected sources as high as 4K for display on Ultra HD TVs. If you haven't yet taken the 4K plunge, you can also choose upscaling to 1080p HD to make old DVDs glisten with new life on your TV. There's also an extra HDMI input on the front panel.

Our Take

Building on a series that has been around now for 5 years, the RX-A780 continues a tradition of good surround sound with up-to-the-minute features including Bluetooth, wireless music connectivity as well as full support for 4K Ultra HD video content. It definitely takes home theatre beyond the ordinary, giving you flexible configuration options and complete control over your system through an intuitive on-screen GUI and Wi-Fi remote app. It does not have a phono input, so we would suggest the purchase of a better phono-preamp if vinyl playback is important. This can be connected via the Audio 1 lin-level input on the rear panel.

Although Yamaha is one of our favourite brands - it is seemingly bullet proof and incredibly reliable - buyers need to be cautious with choice of speakers. Its maximum output is just 90 Watts per channel with only two speakers driven. Note: this is typical of all major brands at this price-point. Add more speakers and the output drops significantly. Yes, there is provision to add extra power amps but a smarter way is to make sure any speakers you own or intend to buy will "match" the Receivers' output capabilities. A lot also has to do with the size of your room and how loud you like to play it...even if that is just a few minutes a month! This is important to get right and so you may want to look at our Home Theatre system packages (some include the RX-A780) to get a feel for what's available. They are guaranteed to work well and sound superb. Of course, you can always give us a call to have a chat.

What may seem like small details  -  a solidly built double-bottomed chassis - separate power supplies for digital and analogue circuitry - all add up to better performance and this is all supported by an industry best full 4-year manufacturer's warranty. In fact, Yamaha have such confidence in the AVENTAGE receiver product line-up that if any fault should develop in the first year of ownership, they will exchange it for a brand-new unit!
