About The Proficient Audio C651 In-Ceiling Speakers
The Proficient Audio C651 is designed specifically to be installed in your ceiling right above your TV or wall mounted projector screen.
For many consumers living space is tight. Some are in older homes that weren't big on extra large size lounge rooms and others are in small apartments. If that's you and yet you still demand great sound, but don't want to take up valuable floor or even wall space with speaker category, then you are looking at one of very few products that ticks all those boxes - no pun intended!
The Proficient Audio C651's are a very good speaker and are sold on an individual basis. Both the woofer and tweeter in this 2-way design are angled forward by 15 degrees so you could easily create a 2.1; 5.1 or even 7.1 surround sound system. Each speaker features a high-performance 165mm (6½") woofer that will assure excellent sound reproduction.
Now you may well think that such a small woofer may not be capable of reproducing low bass frequencies, however this 165mm polypropylene woofer goes down surprisingly deep to 45Hz bass which is getting close to some moderately priced subwoofers. Of course, the C651's won't "belt-out" the bass at high levels like a good subwoofer can, but you can be assured that this good spec means that when combined with a good subwoofer that is calibrated to match the C651's, you will enjoy a seamless delivery of sound.
The tweeter is also a tried and tested silk dome tweeter that also pivots for fine-tuning and will produce clear and sweet sounding high frequencies. This design has been around for decades. The C651's are nominally 8 Ohms impedance and for in-ceiling speakers are quite efficient at 91db so although you could connect almost any amp or AV receiver, we recommend something between 50 Watts and 100 Watts RMS per channel when playing at "average" (not room shaking) levels which is where we see these speakers sitting in the market-place. The C651's come supplied with thin-bezel grilles that are held in place by Neo Magnets.
Research - Building Projects
If you are reading this material as part of research of a new building product, then you may be surprised to know that on average in the USA, 65% of all new homes built have multi-room sound in some description specified as a standard feature. Although we don't have the exact figures for Australia, we're fairly confident that it will be the same or even more. Australian's love new technology.
But sadly, the big home builders have looked at this as a simply a profit opportunity and unless you organise otherwise will install what are known as "contractor series" speakers. If you guessed that these were bottom of the pile quality, you'd be right! A wrong decision here means you are stuck with bad sound and until the day you move or have them replaced.
Tip: Due to a simple lack of knowledge, many consumers think that In-Ceiling Speakers are a cheap option/alternative to other types of speakers. However, good quality In-Ceiling Speakers need some serious engineering to work well in your ceiling where dust and extremes of temperature take their toll. Let us assure you though that they have developed to a point where many of the high-end models will easily out-perform many On-Wall, In-Wall or Satellite designs. So don't think they are inferior in any way. Some models - including Proficient Audio - have 'boxes' that you can buy as an optional extra which protect not just from the elements but are also meet one-hour fire-proof specifications.
Our Take On The C651
For those of us that have not only a need for in-ceiling speakers, but a desire for something that has been designed to sound as good as possible, Proficient Audio based in the USA and part of the Nortel Group is a company you can trust. They are also the company behind Elan and Niles whom we also support and have done for around 25 years! Looking at the improvements they've made in the different lines over the years, shows clearly that they are thinking about the specific use of the speaker in the home environment. You'll enjoy very good In-Ceiling performance with any of the Proficient Audio speakers and the C651's are suitable for any in-door application.
The one thing buyers need to understand is the power input. The maximum clean or undistorted input on the C651's is 100 Watts RMS. Like ALL speakers, they have limitations and the C651's are best suited to low to medium level surround sound systems. Why? The reason is that it is distortion that 'cooks' or destroys a speaker so you need an amplifier AND speaker system that will deliver the volume level you want - even for very short periods - without any distortion. As mentioned above, they are quite efficient at 91dB, so used with amplification in the 50 Watt to 120 Watt range and within each products limitations will deliver great performance for a long time. And if you're thinking one or even two decent subwoofers will help then you're absolutely right! To discuss this more, please speak with Simon Lee or send an email to: [email protected]
