About Proficient Audio C625TT In-Ceiling speakers
Stereo sound doesn't get any simpler than the Proficient Audio C625TT In-Ceiling speaker! It is unique among the range because it can be used as either a stereo or mono speaker which is great for indoor places where it is either impractical or you don't need a stereo pair - like a hallway or walk-in robe.
There are dozens if not hundreds of In-Wall and In-Ceiling speaker brands on the market. In fact, if you order enough, the Asian manufacturers will put any name you like on them! Don't laugh, because it is actually happening and boy are they cheap...but also nasty - really nasty! Please, don't be fooled by the look and conclude it is all one big con and that they're all basically the same.
The good news is that you can now buy In-Ceiling Speakers that are made with integrity, are fairly priced and actually deliver very good sound and here at Audio Trends we believe we have the best of the best when it comes to In-Ceiling and In-Wall Speakers. Proficient Audio, based in Florida USA, is one of those brands. Everything they put their name to is designed in house including their In-Wall and In-Ceiling products which although mostly unseen will allow you to enjoy rich, dynamic sound throughout your home without sacrificing any floor space.
Awesome Performance: Careful tuning from Proficient's team of devoted audio enthusiast/engineers makes the C625TT a sweet-sounding speaker. You can use the C625TT with a wide range of amplifiers, thanks to their relatively high sensitivity of 92dB. Quite a number of speakers in this category can require as much as three times more power to 'drive' them! That simply means you need a more powerful and probably more expensive amplifier! Another nice plus for the DIY customer is that all Proficient Audio 'custom' speakers are easy to install thanks to a sturdy dogleg mounting system. Another bonus is that all of the Proficient 165mm ceiling speakers use the same mounting template so you never have to worry about cutting the wrong size hole when using a variety of different models (at this size) throughout your home.
Efficiency: As mentioned above, the C625TT's are above average when it comes to the SPL or efficiency rating - aka 92dB. This means that they find it relatively easy to deliver a punchy sound even from a lower powered amplifier. What does this mean in real terms? Simply that they are best used with amplifiers with an output ranging from around 40 Watts RMS to 100 Watts RMS output at the higher end, although maximum input is 75 Watts of 'clean' undistorted power. The reason for this recommendation is that you should never be driving your amplifier to the max as it will 'clip' and then 'cook' your speakers and this is more of a problem with lower output amplifiers/receivers. So if you have a low powered amplifier - say 40-50 Watts - and you will be playing at relatively low volume levels, then the combo should be OK. This speaker is compatible with 8 Ohms and has a pretty impressive frequency response of between 36Hz and 20kHz. Speaker grilles are micro-perforated and attached or held in place by neodymium magnets rather than the old way of forcing them into a narrow bezel or slot. This makes the entire installation process very quick.
Research - Building Projects
If you are reading this material as part of research of a new building product, then you may be surprised to know that on average in the USA, 65% of all new homes built have multi-room sound in some description specified as a standard feature. Although we don't have the exact figures for Australia, we're fairly confident that it will be the same or even more. Australian's love new technology.
But sadly, the big home builders have looked at this as a simply a profit opportunity and unless you organise otherwise will install what are known as "contractor series" speakers. If you guessed that these were bottom of the pile quality, you'd be right! A wrong decision here means you are stuck with bad sound and until the day you move or have them replaced.
Tip: Due to a simple lack of knowledge, many consumers think that In-Ceiling Speakers are a cheap option/alternative to other types of speakers. However, good quality In-Ceiling Speakers need some serious engineering to work well in your ceiling where dust and extremes of temperature take their toll. Some models - including Proficient Audio - have 'boxes' that you can buy as an optional extra which protect not just from the elements but are also meet one-hour fire-proof specifications.
Our Take On The C625TT
For those of us that have not only a need for in-ceiling speakers, but a desire for something that has been designed to sound as good as possible, Proficient Audio based in the USA and part of the Nortel Group is a company you can trust. They are also the company behind Elan and Niles whom we also support and have done for around 25 years! Looking at the improvements they've made in the different lines over the years, shows clearly that they are thinking about the specific use of the speaker in the home environment. You'll enjoy a high-level of In-Ceiling performance with any of the Proficient Speaker range. The C625TT's are suitable for any decent multi-room music system where you don't need or it is impractical to install a stereo pair.
The one thing buyers need to understand is the power input. The maximum clean or undistorted input on the C625TT's is 75 Watts RMS and that is probably adequate for most customers who want this type of speaker. But like ALL speakers, they have limitations. and the C625TT's are best suited too low to moderate level multi-room systems. Why? The reason is that it is distortion that 'cooks' or destroys a speaker so you need an amplifier AND speaker system that will deliver the volume level you want - even for very short periods - without any distortion. So something with at least 40 Watts per channel and up to a maximum of 100 Watts is probably the area best suited to these speakers. Now if you're thinking a couple of decent subwoofers will help even in a multi-room audio system, then you're absolutely right!
