About Proficient Audio C501 In-Ceiling Speakers

The Proficient Audio C501 will meet the expectations of all but the most fanatical customer. At just 90mm deep, it will fit into a typical Aussie home wall or ceiling cavity.

The Proficient Audio C501's The compact size of the Proficient Audio C501's allows them to fit almost anywhere - even in hallways and walk-in robes - yet its pivoting tweeter and high-quality 133mm (5¼") woofer assure excellent sound reproduction.

Its relatively small size gives it a discreet look that is ideal for elegant interiors and narrow hallways allowing you to use more C501's to better spread the sound out more evenly.

Now you may well think that such a small woofer may not be capable of reproducing low bass frequencies, however the diminutive 133mm woofer goes down surprisingly deep to 40Hz bass which is getting close to some moderately priced subwoofers. Of course, the C501's won't "belt-out" the bass at high levels like a good subwoofer can, but you can be assured that this good spec means that you will get quite a full sound at lower levels and without a subwoofer. Very good for rear speakers in a modest 5.1 surround setup or multi-room system. The tweeter is also pretty good. It is a pivoting 12mm (½") polyamide hard dome tweeter that will produces clear high frequencies. The C501's are nominally 8 Ohms impedance and for in-ceiling speakers are reasonably efficient at 90db so although you could connect almost any amp or AV receiver, we recommend something between 50 Watts and 100 Watts RMS per channel when playing at "average" (not room shaking) levels. The C501's come supplied with thin-bezel grilles that are held in place by Neo Magnets.

Research - Building Projects

If you are reading this material as part of research of a new building product, then you may be surprised to know that on average in the USA, 65% of all new homes built have multi-room sound in some description specified as a standard feature. Although we don't have the exact figures for Australia, we're fairly confident that it will be the same or even more. Australian's love new technology.

But sadly, the big home builders have looked at this as a simply a profit opportunity and unless you organise otherwise will install what are known as "contractor series" speakers. If you guessed that these were bottom of the pile quality, you'd be right! A wrong decision here means you are stuck with bad sound and until the day you move or have them replaced.

Tip: Due to a simple lack of knowledge, many consumers think that In-Ceiling Speakers are a cheap option/alternative to other types of speakers. However, good quality In-Ceiling Speakers need some serious engineering to work well in your ceiling where dust and extremes of temperature take their toll. Let us assure you though that they have developed to a point where many of the high-end models will easily out-perform many On-Wall, In-Wall or Satellite designs. So don't think they are inferior in any way. Some models - including Proficient Audio - have 'boxes' that you can buy as an optional extra which protect not just from the elements but are also meet one-hour fire-proof specifications.

Our Take On The C501's

For those of us that have not only a need for in-ceiling speakers, but a desire for something that has been designed to sound as good as possible, Proficient Audio based in the USA and part of the Nortel Group is a company you can trust. They are also the company behind Elan and Niles whom we also support and have done for around 25 years! Looking at the improvements they've made in the different lines over the years, shows clearly that they are thinking about the specific use of the speaker in the home environment. You'll enjoy very good In-Ceiling performance with any of the Proficient Audio speakers and the C501's are suitable for any in-door application.

The one thing buyers need to understand is the power input. The maximum clean or undistorted input on the C501's is 75 Watts RMS. Like ALL speakers, they have limitations and the C501's are best suited to low level surround sound or multi-room systems. Why? The reason is that it is distortion that 'cooks' or destroys a speaker so you need an amplifier AND speaker system that will deliver the volume level you want - even for very short periods - without any distortion. And if you're thinking a couple of decent subwoofers will help then you're absolutely right! To discuss this more, please speak with Simon Lee or send an email to: [email protected]
