Compact Disc Players – The Start Of The Digital Revolution

In the 1970’s Sony & Philips pooled the might of their technical resources to co-develop a music format that would fundamentally change the way we listened to music. In 1982 they released the fruits of their labour – the Compact Disc – with the catch phrase ‘Pure Perfect Sound Forever’. Now some may argue that the early CD’s and CD players were anything but perfect but the fact is that the Compact Disc was embraced worldwide as a giant step forward in music storage and playback. Previous music playback formats, open reel, cassettes & vinyl were all prone to wearing out sooner or later but the CD changed all that. And it had convenience feature like being able to choose to play a particular track instantly, program a specific sequence of tracks and even play randomly from a disc. Once multi disc players came on the scene every restaurant and Friday night drinks DJ thought they had it made.

But digital technology has gone on to much greater things than even Sony & Philips could have envisioned. Deep into the 21st century, music streaming is becoming the music consumption method of choice and the same ones & zero’s Sony & Philips developed all those years ago are still used in exactly the same way when you play a track from an online streaming service like Spotify or Deezer or Tidal, or select a favourite from your own local music library. So, the CD may have been in steady decline since the beginning of this century but the digital technology behind it is really just getting started.

Fortunately, even in it’s twilight years, Compact Disc technology has been steadily advancing, and today few would argue that music sounds absolutely wonderful when a well recorded disc is played on a decent CD player. Naturally, Audio Trends have some of the best disc players around from the likes of Audiolab, Cambridge Audio, Denon, Marantz, NAD, Naim Audio, Rega, Rotel and of course Yamaha, who still make a 5 disc carousel model for those who like to pop on a few discs and sit back and relax into the music.
