Audiophile musical excellence on a budget! The Rega Apollo CDP delivers at a price that you will not believe. The Apollo CDP is one of the most full featured CD players on the market and will guarantee an incredible musical experience from the moment you load the disc.

The new Apollo CDP uses the same electronic circuit found in the hugely successful Apollo-R CD player. Re-housed in Rega's latest custom aluminium case to match the new styling of the Brio amplifier, the Apollo utilises Rega's own custom chipset and software offering a truly unique level of performance.

Rega Apollo CD Player

When a disc is loaded into the player the display will read 'initialising'. This revolutionary new player will analyse the disc to be played and (rather like the engine management system on a modern car which optimises the engine settings to ambient temperature, engine temperature, fuel quality etc.) will adjust itself to the disc in order to give optimal trouble free reading and great sound quality. This process takes a few short seconds and the resultant musical improvements are well worth the wait.

A new high quality mechanism has been used which incorporates a three-point mounting ball chuck. This has advantages over the magnetic puck type design. Firstly it presents the disc as flat as is possible to the laser spot directly resulting in improved reading of the information on the disc. Secondly the mass of the puck is lost completely giving the mechanism itself less stress and better acceleration and braking performance.

This revolutionary player has been three years in design and is nothing like any player in specialist Hi Fi today. Rega, together with its design partners have pioneered something new and very special - a highly advanced servo controller which uses the very latest signal processing techniques to ensure that the raw data that is recovered from the disc is of the very highest quality. Because our fully digital servo can use highly advanced algorithms the laser spot is kept in the optimum position for data recovery in terms of focus spot size and tracking position.

Advanced Digital Technology: Previous chip-sets always made compromises on error correction. Likewise it was possible to have good jog resistance if the music was compromised or better musical performance at the expense of jog resistance. Regas new chip-sets allows optimum musical performance and optimised jog or vibration resistance. The entire IC is clocked via a very special PLL of Rega's own design. This allows better CD data recovery as well as a big improvement in the quality of the data delivered to the DAC.

In the design of the CPU IC, Rega went to very great lengths to ensure that the data and address bus noise was kept at an absolute minimum, this will ensure that the ground and signal connections to the DAC are as 'clean' as is possible. Rega have used the very latest highest performance DAC from their previous partners Wolfson, the highly sonically regarded WM8742 Sigma Delta 24bit DAC with differential outputs.

Power Supplies: The ‘digital’ power supplies feeding the CD processor, optical block, laser diode amplifier and slicer have been enhanced. This is achieved by using the same high performance low noise power supplies found in the same location within the Isis CD player. This vastly improves the playability, error correction and the ‘inner core’ processing of the digital CD ‘spinner’ part of the Apollo-R.

Output Amplifier: The discrete output amplifier has been tweaked to reduce the overall THD from typically 0.005% to 0.0025%, whilst at the same time improving the overall sound quality of the output amplifier. This amplifier is of discreet design and uses the very highest quality audio components. It operates in 'Class A' and represents a big step up in performance from previous players. Because of the high quality 'Class A' output stage the CD players sound quality will improve over the first 15 minutes after switching on.

User Interface: Rega have improved the user interface control by using a dedicated display microprocessor, which eases the workload on the main control processors giving an improvement in the control code stability, usability and improved speed of initialisation of the disc being played which now matches that of the benchmark Isis CD player.

The player comes with a dedicated CD remote control handset as standard. Although the remote control supplied as standard is specific to the this model and is necessary to access the advanced functions of the player the Rega Apollo CDP remote will control all the basic functions of the Apollo and the Brio amplifier. Not only will this player set new levels for sound quality for our customers but it also has the capability of playing MP3 discs.

Interesting Facts: To the best of our understanding, there have only ever been five large multinational companies with the technology and knowledge base to develop the remarkably complex operating software for CD players. Development of this software and chip-sets to operate CD transports was generally curtailed in the 1990’s. After this time, all development effort was directed towards the design of DVD players and other advanced formats. Rega and other specialist hi-fi manufacturers were totally reliant on companies like Sony and Philips to supply transports and their operating chip-sets. In 2003 Sony stopped supply and sent the specialist hi-fi industry into a flurry of activity in search of feasible alternatives. Many manufacturers were able to resource their supply from Far Eastern companies.

Rega worked hard to locate a British software company who were developing a totally new disc operating system. A system, which was highly advanced, even in the early development stages. Rega was the only manufacturer to develop the unique new disc operating system. Due to ever increasing computer processing power and memory capacity, it was possible to build in an enormous increase in memory capability. This allowed the data retrieval to meet the original CD ‘Red Book’ specifications without compromise to the musical performance. All previous chip-sets were unable to achieve this due to their limited memory and signal processing capacity.

Rega’s British designed chip-set delivers superior error correction and signal processing capacity. This enhances the sonic performance of the player and delivers a unique level of musicality. The Apollo is the latest version of Rega’s best selling CD player housed in a brand new case. The Rega Apollo’s unique sound harmonises with the rest of their products and will integrate into any music system seamlessly. You will enjoy this very special CD player. Rega have spent a very long time creating it, drawing on more than 40 years of experience in specialist hi-fi manufacturing.
