About The Cambridge Audio CXC Series 2 CD Transport

The Cambridge Audio CXC is actually NOT a CD player as most people understand the term. Rather, it is a "CD Transport Only Component" that is designed for optimum playback quality.

What is a CD transport you ask? Simply a component designed to 'spin' your CD's and extract the digital information to the highest level possible. This is in turn decoded/converted by a DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) to analogue. To put it another way, it means that inside you'll only find 'half' of what's usually inside a CD player. Although this sounds a little unconventional, it delivers many added benefits. Firstly, without an onboard DAC the power supply only has to drive the CD transport. Secondly, by being dedicated to this task it can provide a clean, stable power supply for the highest performance possible at its price. And finally and in our opinion most importantly, there is the further advantage of increased flexibility. Chose to match with the Cambridge Audio CXN V2 which is a superb music streamer and DAC, one of the Cambridge CXA amplifier/DACs (CXA81 or CXA61) or with one of the other amps with built-in DAC (NAD; Marantz) or use your own choice of DAC entirely;up to you. By starting with such a high quality transport design, the CXC could see you through many system and DAC upgrades without being in the least bit out of place. We believe this is a smart move by the folk at Cambridge.

Note: The CXC is just a CD transport mechanism and as such does not have analogue outputs!

S3 Servo For Superb Resolution: Rather than using 'off the shelf' CD software, Cambridge use their own S3 servo processor. Designed for efficient recovery of CD digital data with state of the art error correction, it's been engineered to play audio CDs brilliantly. Multi-purpose drives simply can't compete. The vast majority of optical drives in use today are designed with computers in mind. While they can read a variety of disc media, they lack the precision and finesse of a dedicated audio drive. To address this, Cambridge Audio has written its own software to precisely control the drive's laser and motor assembly for CD Audio discs only. The proprietary Cambridge S3 servo solution effectively turns a universal disc drive into a dedicated CD spinner; it can calibrate and monitor the speed of the disc, holding it steady and constant. By managing where the laser head is and what it's reading, as well as maximizing error correction, the CXC can get the maximum amount of clean data off the disc as possible, with the minimum jitter.

Audiophile-Grade Construction: The CXC utilises a low-resonance acoustically damped metal chassis, with an ultra-clean low noise power supply. Beneath the hood, its PCB design employs double-sided surface mount technology, which eliminates wire links and ensures an ultra short signal path, thereby reducing signal deterioration.

Toroidal Transformer: The Cambridge Audio CXC employs an audiophile-grade toroidal transformer delivering ultra-low low noise and distortion power to the CD transport. The toroidal transformer provides high-quality power output to the audio circuits with no clipping of the waveform signal to provide a consistent signal; as well as no transformer noise, buzz, or hum. The toroidal transformer is also full shielded against internal and external electrical interference to maintain quality of power and signal.

Remote Control: The CXC is supplied with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the CD transport. The remote duplicates the unit's front-panel control functions. The remote is also able to control other Cambridge Audio CX series components, like CX Series integrated amplifiers. The CXC also incorporates Cambridge Audio's C-BUS connection, which allows one remote to power on/off both CD transport and CX series amplifier in sync.

Sleek Style: The CXC is part of the totally redesigned CX-Series. The distinctive tear-drop profile gives the CXC a contemporary look and makes it the ideal partner for the digital amplifiers and network player. Yet it's far more than just a good-looking case; it helps the sound quality, too. With rigid, metal construction and low-resonance design, the casing helps shield the player from both mechanical and electrical interference, helping to improve clarity and reduce background noise.

Our Take

As a dedicated CD transport, the Cambridge CXC offers complete system matching flexibility and the finest sound quality from your CDs and redefines CD playback quality at its price. It will be a perfect complement to any high quality DAC such as the Cambridge Audio CXN V2 and of course the beautiful Cambridge Audio CXA81 or CXA61 stereo integrated amps with their superb built-in ESS Sabre DACs. Definitely any of these combinations are for the serious music lover and will bring out the best you can expect from the CD medium.
