The Lonesome Jubilee is the ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter John Mellencamp, credited as John Cougar Mellencamp. The album was released by Mercury Records on August 24, 1987. Four singles were released from the album, the first two in 1987 and the last two in 1988.

Album Overview

Multi-platinum-selling and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter John (Cougar) Mellencamp is known for his heartland rock style in the vein of Springsteen, Tom Petty and Bob Seger. The follow-up to Scarecrow, The Lonesome Jubilee (1987) album expanded on his musical and lyrical vision on life in the US heartland. Musically, Mellencamp adds more Country and Folk influences than on its predecessor, including fiddles and accordeons. These rich textures are the basis for Mellencamp's lyrics dealing with America's working class life. This is a must have album for fans of Steve Earle, CCR, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.

The Lonesome Jubilee reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and features the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10s "Cherry Bomb" and "Paper In Fire." The album is certified triple-platinum in the U.S.A. where he has amassed 22 Top 40 hits in a musical career spanning more than 35 years. This is one of five classic Mellencamp albums from the limited edition 5LP vinyl box set, The Vinyl Collection 1982-1989 from Mercury/Universal Music Enterprises. Each album is also sold separately.

"To state his theme this time, Mellencamp prints a passage from Ecclesiastes on the record jacket, one of many Biblical references that run through The Lonesome Jubilee. Generations come and go but it makes no difference,” the passage goes. “Everything is unutterably weary and tiresome. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. … So I saw that there is nothing better for men than that they should be happy in their work, for that is what they are here for, and no one can bring them back to life to enjoy what will be in the future, so let them enjoy it now.” - Rolling Stone

"The Lonesome Jubilee continues the exploration of John Mellencamp's fascination with America coming together as a united country and its romantic, more personal side. While the stories of Scarecrow were more universal, on The Lonesome Jubilee they are more direct and personal and hit close to home. The struggles these characters face are more real than ever and that's a credit to the continuing improvement in Mellencamp's lyrics. The music is the strong part here, as folk and country have made their into the Mellencamp repertoire, and it enhances the overall sound of the record. Key tracks are Paper In Fire, Check It Out, The Real Life, and Cherry Bomb." - All music.com
