About Focal Chora 806 Speakers
The Focal Chora 806 bookshelf speaker is the affordable entry into the Chora range and is another fantastic example of a model that offers a tremendous amount of speaker for the money. With a trickle-down aluminium/magnesium inverted-dome tweeter and a proprietary Slatefiber mid/bass driver in a well sized and beautifully finished cabinet, the Chora 806 is designed to fit in well with your décor whilst offering flexible placement and great sound.
Made in France at Focal’s specialist manufacturing facilities, Chora is a new generation of high-quality yet affordable loudspeakers, featuring unique technology and design. It’s great what you get for your money with this medium sized model. The Focal Chora 806 bookshelf speaker utilizes a two-way design with a 1" (25mm) TNF aluminium/magnesium inverted-dome tweeter and a 6.5" (165mm) slatefiber cone mid/bass driver for precise and dynamic sound. The Chora Series of loudspeakers offer incredibly faithful sound reproduction, whether you are listening to music or a movie soundtrack. The Chora 806 is a medium size bookshelf or standmount speaker which works best in rooms measuring up to around 25 square metres.
A Closer Look
TNF Aluminium/Magnesium Tweeter: The Focal Chora 806 features a single 1" TNF inverted-dome tweeter made of aluminium and magnesium alloy. The inverted-dome technology allows optimal energy transfer and wide dispersion. The aluminium/magnesium makeup guarantees exception performance in terms of stiffness and damping, thus ensuring a subtle blend of softness and dynamics. Performance of the TNF tweeter is enhanced by its new Poron suspension material. Poron is a polyurethane micro-cellular foam which has a porous open-cell structure. This memory foam is very light which means that the suspension will not become damaged or compressed with time. It is an essential element of the TNF tweeter as the suspension allows the dome to move freely. Its uniform and constant physical properties ensure excellent stability and linearity, along with extreme accuracy and distortion-free sound. The result is a sound which is soft and precise and which offers improved harmonics richness and a more precise soundstage
Slatefiber Mid/Bass Driver: The Chora 806 uses Slatefiber cone technology in its mid/bass driver. Slatefiber technology, exclusive to Focal, involves the use of recycled, non-woven carbon fibres applied as a sandwich between two layers of thermoplastic polymer. In their quest for perfection, Focal engineers have opted to use non-woven carbon fibres, all pointing in the same direction to achieve even greater rigidity and better damping. Manufactured in the Focal workshops using an ultra-modern industrial tool, the "slate" effect of the cone provides better damping and rigidity, but also lightness - the three "essentials" of a good loudspeaker driver.
Bass Reflex Enclosure: The Focal Chora 806's speaker cabinet uses solid MDF construction, internal bracing, and a non-parallel inner wall structure to reduce internal resonance for less coloration. This bass reflex type cabinet uses an aerodynamic front port for greater efficiency and to reduce distortion of the bass.
Grilles: The Chora 806 bookshelf loudspeaker comes with a detachable magnetic cloth grille that covers the mid/bass driver. The grille has to be aligned just right with the front of the cabinet to magnetically attach to the speaker. The tweeter features its own integrated, non-removable grille.
Binding Posts: The Focal Chora 806 is outfitted with a pair of binding post terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors, and banana plugs (single only). You'll need to remove two plastic caps from the binding post terminals to accommodate banana plugs.
Mounting & Placement Options: The Chora 806 can be mounted on a bookshelf or cabinet, on the optional Chora 806 Stands (sold separately), or on other compatible speaker stands, sold separately, here. Self-adhesive rubber feet are included to keep the speaker stable and protect your mounting surface.
In The News
“On the subject of compact monitors and low bass, designers of this class of loudspeakers make choices which balance sensitivity and amplifier power demands with ultimate bass extension and port behavior. To that end, Chora was easy to drive, was appreciative of high-quality amplification, and not demanding of huge amounts of power. Focal opted for an evenness in the quality of bass—one that balances pitch and punch in roughly equal amounts. I think Focal made the right choices. It’s a winning strategy that makes it that much easier to smoothly integrate a subwoofer, should you be interested in doing so down the road.
Soundstaging and imaging were very good. The 806 was unobtrusive in the room and effectively disappeared during all but the most high-output playback. Instruments were focused and spread out naturally across a dimensional stage.
As this review wound down I found my admiration for the Chora 806 increasing by the hour. It struck me as a loudspeaker that didn’t attempt to win over ears based on a couple of strong attributes. Rather, it’s an efficiently well-rounded package of solidly engineered performance that touches a multitude of sonic bases and serves the music and the listener well—a fitting reminder that even in 2020, there’s still a lot of life left in the little two-way compact monitor. I can’t imagine any compact enthusiast with (this much) to spend being anything but thrilled with the Chora 806.” The Absolute Sound
“While many grouse about flagship loudspeakers, the Focal Chora is a perfect example of vertical manufacturing done right. There are precious few manufacturers left in the world that make their own cabinets and drivers – Focal is one of the select few. Because they make everything in-house, they can put so much more value into a thousand dollar pair of speakers than a company that has to outsource everything.
This is why the Choras are such a great deal. There’s a level of sonic sophistication present in the Choras that is absent in most other speakers at this price point. These are incredible speakers for someone just getting into the hifi game, and more than worthy of one of our Exceptional Value Awards for 2020.
Focal Chora 806 speakers offer wonderful sound and build quality at a very reasonable price point. For those who desire heartier and deeper bass reinforcement than a stand-mounted speaker can offer, the floor standing iterations in the Chora line — or the addition of a subwoofer — will help satiate that thirst. Either way, you can’t go wrong. The 806 can easily anchor a budget-friendly system now and rise to the challenge as other upstream components come and go over time.” Tone Publications
