About The Cambridge & Q Acoustics CD Stereo System
Choosing a new stereo system can be tricky. However, back in 1980 when Audio Trends was born, this is all we did! Of course the audio scene has grown significantly since then, but we still sell a lot of straight stereo gear. Our systems are all based on a simple philosophy. (1) Do they sound good; (2) are they good quality and (3) are they good value for money? We invite you to check out our various system combinations; come in for a demo or call our friendly and experienced staff to discuss more.
Cambridge are known for their beautiful Hi-Fi components and there is no exception with the AX Series which pairs high quality with outstanding value for money and is the perfect way for the Hi-Fi curious to build their first stacking separates system. Taking design cues from Cambridge's award-winning Edge and CX ranges, Cambridge have designed the AX Series components to be a straightforward introduction to Great British Sound. We've teamed up the Cambridge AXA35 stereo amplifier and AXC25 CD Player with a pair of extremely compact Q Acoustics 3020i speakers and QED 79 Strand cable which both it and the Deltron banana plugs we supply and fit are actually made in England! Let's take a closer look.
Cambridge Audio Amplifier & CD Player
The Cambridge Audio AXA35 stereo amplifier forms the heart of this mid level system and delivers performance at a level way above its price point. With 35 Watts per channel output, its design elements including an oversize toroidal transformer that makes sure the amp has ample welly to get your speakers boogieing like they should. The speaker connections are substantial binding posts so thicker gauge wire can be accommodated. There are four separate stereo line level connections plus a phono (turntable) input on the rear for connecting the CD player and other components, as well as a convenient 3.5mm input on the front panel for smartphones. A full size headphone socket provides the sonic goods while tone controls help tailor the sound to your liking. With a white display screen, this sleek looking amplifier is housed in a substantial chassis which sports a stylish thick grey brushed aluminium front panel which looks great in any interior.
Let's face it, you've probably got 100's or even 1000's of CDs! These still offer a high level of performance and way above MP3 - the basic standard on streaming services. The AXC25 naturally has all the essentials a good disc player needs. The Cambridge AXC25 is a super-cool and versatile CD player with gapless playback and featuring a high quality digital to analogue converter (DAC), to convert the digital information stored on a CD into an analogue sound signal. As well as regular audio CDs, the AXC25 will play MP3 and WMA files from home recorded CD-R, CD-RW and CD-ROM discs. There's also a dedicated digital output which allows you to record from a CD to a digital format or even connect to a standalone DAC when you're ready to improve your sound even further. With a multi-function display screen, this sleek looking CD Player is housed in a substantial chassis which sports a stylish thick grey front panel which looks great in any interior.
Q Acoustics 3020i Speakers
The 3020i is the latest incarnation in the 3000 series of speakers from Q-Acoustics. In fact the previous model was a 5-Star Award-Winning speaker. At the heart of these revised speakers is a much-improved cabinet. P2P (Point-to-Point) bracing is now deployed to enhance rigidity and reduce cabinet distortion. Reducing cabinet distortion lets the drive units operate at their optimum, giving a cleaner, purer sound.
If you are looking for large scale sound then these compact bookshelf speakers put out a quality room filling sound despite their small size. This is thanks to their small but precision drivers which focus on the power to size ratio. The crossover has been revised to take advantage of a larger cabinet volume than the previous model to enhance sensitivity and bass extension.
Cabinet Construction: Q Acoustics have consistently designed aesthetically pleasing cabinets and the 3020i keeps the same basic design as its predecessor, the 3020. The curved MDF boxes offer a modern take on the classic bookshelf design and the shiny chrome framing around the drivers mean many may opt to leave the magnetic front grilles off. The 3020i has been made 25% taller and deeper than previous models. This increased internal volume has enabled Q Acoustics to gain an extended low frequency response from the ported design so that more-than-ever the smaller enclosures in the range belie their diminutive stature with an impressively large-scale sound. As an added benefit, noise created inside the enclosure has been greatly reduced. While similarly priced enclosures (not sold by Audio Trends!) often respond to a light knock with a hollow echo, the 3020i feels decisively solid. In fact, Q Acoustics have now deployed internal P2P (point-to-point) bracing to reduce cabinet distortion.
The 3020i features low profile binding posts that have been incorporated with sockets deep enough to accept 4mm Banana Plugs and now stick out rather than being embedded inside a small cavity like most speakers. With the plugs installed, you will have a depth of around 340mm
Note: Q-Acoustics recommend you connect an amplifier/receiver in the 25 to 75 Watts per channel output. So what's the deal with the Cambridge AXA35 which is rated at a maximum 35 Watts per channel? The first thing to note is that these are at the extreme ends of the spectrum for the speakers. The second is that it is distortion that kills speakers and this happens when either product is driven past its maximum and that is key. So the Cambridge AXA35 with 35 watts output per channel is perfect in a small to medium room and if both amp and speakers are operated sensibly will give a really good and if required, a loud performance. The last point has to do with the SPL specification. To deliver good bass, the Q Acoustics 3020i's have an 88dB SPL and this requires a 'high-current' amplifier design or put simply, something like the Cambridge AXA35 which meets that brief. Pre-Terminated Speaker Cable Included: Yes, this system is truly complete. The QED brand has been sold world-wide for over 40 years. In fact they started around about the same time we did. Audio Trends has probably sold enough 79 strand cable to go to the moon and back - well it seems that way! It is a really good quality cable with fairly neutral sound character and at a reasonable price. To make it easy to connect to the amplifier and speakers, our service department solders Deltron banana plugs to all ends making the system truly plug-n-play
Our Take On The Cambridge & Q Acoustics CD Stereo System
Q Acoustics make expensive speakers nowadays, but they're best known for the performance of their affordable speakers like the 3020i. The 3020i's don't boast an exotic design, technological gimmicks, or rare materials. Instead, they’re proof of how far good engineering and tasteful tuning goes. Both classy and modern, the rounded corners set them apart from the usual boxy fare in this price class. They don’t have the same imposing heft common to similarly priced speakers – which helps dampen resonances – but Q Acoustics says it’s designed the internal bracing through computer modelling so as to minimise noise from the speaker‘s enclosure. They definitely have a distinctively European flavour and deliver a neutral and transparent sound. There are other speakers in the same price-range including Acoustic Energy and Paradigm and really all three brands are winners. If you want a bit more bottom end kick, why not invest in a subwoofer? And yes, we do have small subwoofers that will virtually disappear and not cost a truckload. See below for recommendations. Same with Cambridge Audio. The Amplifier and CD player are built on solid designs that are proven performers. The power output of the Amplifier is ample for the speakers in a small to medium sized room - say around 28 square metres. As is our custom, the system comes with QED 79 strand speaker cable which again is a foundation product. If you've got a few extra dollars to spend, upgrade the cable to QED XT25.
