About The Cambridge CXA81/CXN, Rega Planar 3, Klipsch Heresy IV Vinyl Streaming System

The Cambridge CXA81/CXN, Rega Planar 3, Klipsch Heresy IV Vinyl Streaming System covers all the bases. It offers vinyl playback from the wonderful Rega Planar 3 turntable and superb streaming flexibility and sound from the Cambridge Audio CXN. All this musical goodness is channelled through the beefy Cambridge CXA81 amplifier into the horn loaded Klipsch Heresy IV speakers.

This system is a 21st century audiophile’s dream. Let’s put that in context.

It’s hard to imagine that 20 years ago the rule of the CD seemed absolute and records were heading the way of the Dodo. But music listening was about to be turned on its head when in late 2001 Seattle company Rhapsody launched the world’s first music streaming service. Then, in early 2005, Sonos released the first streaming products that could actually utilise this strange new way of accessing & playing music. Then in around 2007 vinyl started a comeback which nobody really expected and which is still going strong today. Which leads us to the curious situation we have now where most people are either streaming their music using their latest smartphone or playing round black vinyl discs on technology first invented more than 100 years ago. Who would have thought?

Cambridge CXA81/CXN, Rega Planar 3, Klipsch Heresy IV Speaker System

So, the system you see before you is highly capable in both music streaming and vinyl playback which is exactly the sort of system people want these days. And the brands involved are some of the best. Turntable, Streamer, Amplifier from Rega & Cambridge Audio in the UK matched with Speakers from Klipsch in the USA. A killer combination at a killer price.

Now, eagle eyed readers may have noticed that there is something missing from this system. Where is the phono stage? Well rest assured we have that base covered with the Rega Fono MM included in the system. We also have all the cables included and we are not mucking around with cheap cables on a superb system like this. We have included Van den Hul D-102 MKIII XLR cables between the CXN & CXA81 and D-102 MKIII RCA cables between the Fono MM & the CXA81. The speaker cables are 2.5 Metres per side of the brilliant Van den Hul CS-122 terminated with QED Metal AirLoc banana plugs.

About The Cambridge Audio CXN Network Music Player

The Cambridge CXN puts sound quality first and it does this through the use of quality electronics and painstaking design. Using twin Wolfson DACs (Digital to Analogue Convertors), each channel has its own DAC to process its own information. This gives a more precise and accurate sound quality with improved stereo imaging. When combined with the 2-Pole Dual Differential Bessel, noise-reducing filter, the DACs help give the CXN outstanding levels of clarity and transparency of sound. Simply put, this network player will pull out subtle nuances of sound that you might never even have heard before!

With the CXN you can stream all your locally stored music, including high resolution files. And with its advanced ATF2 up-sampling the CXN has the ultimate detail and least jitter to make the most of even the highest resolution music. Naturally, streaming services such as Spotify Connect, Tidal & Qobuz are well catered for as well as thousands of internet radio stations. The CXN also has Apple Airplay 2, Chromecast Built-In & Optional Bluetooth so every possibility is catered for.

About The Cambridge Audio CXA81 Integrated Amplifier

All the research, all the development, all the time and effort that’s been expended on the CXA81 has been for one reason alone: to make this the most accomplished and absorbing integrated amplifier ever offered at the price. Every component selected, and every engineering decision taken, is based entirely on the desire to progress. The CXA81 has been designed and specified without compromise, in order to deliver the complete musical picture. The 80 Watt per channel CXA81 is designed to bring your music to life, no matter how it’s stored. So it features an entirely new digital board, including the cutting-edge ESS Sabre ES9016 digital-to-analogue convertor. Which means digital audio files up to a heady 32bit/384kHz, or DSD256, are brought dramatically to life, with every detail and nuance delivered intact and in full. The CXA81 combines unparalleled accuracy with vivid musicality, without sacrificing convenience.

The CXA81 covers all connectivity bases, giving you complete freedom of choice. As well as digital optical and digital coaxial inputs, it features unbalanced stereo RCA inputs alongside balanced XLR sockets - and wireless connectivity via Bluetooth’s cutting-edge aptX HD standard is on board too.

About The Rega Planar 3 Turntable With Elys 2 Cartridge

A refined classic, the Rega Planar 3 can trace its lineage all the way back to the original turntable produced by Rega in 1973. All the hallmarks are present and accounted for, such as a thick glass platter, one piece RB330 tonearm, outboard power supply option and the choice of gloss black, white or red finishes. The Elys 2 moving magnet cartridge from Rega is a great match for the Planar 3 and provides the perfect price performance package.

The Rega design team has worked tirelessly to improve every aspect of this turntable offering improved ergonomics, usability and first and foremost, sonic performance. The new ‘Planar 3’ is truly a new turntable from Rega, carrying over just two components from the previous model.

About The Rega Fono MM Phono Stage

The Fono MM Mk5 is a moving magnet disc stage which has been designed to be effective, easy to use and above all reproduce music with the greatest amount of expression and connection. The Fono MM uses a fully discrete, cascaded, complementary amplifier input stage, a configuration designed to optimise the performance of your moving magnet cartridge. The RIAA equalization has been split into two stages to minimise interaction. Polyester capacitors have been used in the signal path and polypropylene capacitors are used in the RIAA equalization circuits.

About The Klipsch Heresy IV Speakers

The Klipsch Heresy IV speaker is a testament to the quality that Klipsch demands from each and every one of its audio products. And, because of its relatively ‘compact’ size, the Klipsch Heresy IV offers the greatest degree of placement flexibility in the Heritage series. First introduced in 1957, this three-way horn-loaded loudspeaker is still able to deliver the awe-inspiring sound that Klipsch fans around the world know and love.

For the Heresy IV, Klipsch once again tweaked this classic design, going with a new polyimide-diaphragm midrange driver. And the tweeter gets an all-new wide-dispersion phase plug, which creates a larger listening "sweet spot." For the first time, the Heresy now features a rear port, which improves low-frequency extension by about 10Hz for more authoritative sound. And Heresy's high-efficiency design — 99 dB sensitivity — makes it an excellent choice for use with low- and medium-powered tube amps.

About The Van den Hul Cables

We have been big fans of Mr A. J. Van den Hul’s cables for a long time and we have a couple of classics included in this system. The D-102 II Hybrid interconnects sound pure, clean and very three dimensional with extremely high resolution. We have included an RCA pair for the phono section and a balanced XLR pair to connect the CXN streamer to the CXA81 amplifier. To pass that amplified signal to the speakers we have chosen the wonderful sounding CS-122 speaker cable terminated with the exceptional QED AirLoc cold weld banana plugs for the most secure and stable connection we have come across. The Van den Hul CS-122 raises the bar in both clarity and musicality whilst adding increased dynamics and uber punchy bass. Perfect for the Klipsch Heresy IV’s.
