About This System

Choosing a new stereo system can be tricky. However, back in 1980 when Audio Trends was born, this is all we did! Of course the audio scene has grown significantly since then, but we still sell a lot of straight stereo gear. Our systems are all based on a simple philosophy. (1) Do they sound good; (2) are they good quality and (3) are they good value for money? We invite you to check out our various system combinations; come in for a demo or call our friendly and experienced staff to discuss more.

Cambridge are known for their beautiful Hi-Fi components and there is no exception with the AX Series which pairs high quality with outstanding value for money and is the perfect way for the Hi-Fi curious to build their first stacking separates system. Taking design cues from Cambridge's award-winning Edge and CX ranges, Cambridge have designed the AX Series components to be a straightforward introduction to Great British Sound. We've teamed up the Cambridge AXR85 stereo receiver and AXC25 CD Player with a pair of British designed B&W 607 S2 Anniversary Series 2-way speakers and QED 79 Strand cable which both it and the Deltron banana plugs we fit are actually made in England! Let's take a closer look.

This stereo system includes Cambridge stereo receiver; CD player and Richter Merlin S6 speakers.

Cambridge Receiver and CD Player

The Cambridge Audio AXR85 stereo receiver forms the heart of this mid level system and delivers performance way above its price point. With a very impressive 85 Watts per channel output, it has enough grunt to fill larger rooms with clean, effortless sound. Twin speaker outlets mean you can have a pair of speakers in another room or spread four speakers around a large, open-plan space. The speaker connections are substantial binding posts so thicker gauge wire can be accommodated. There are four separate stereo line level connections for connecting the CD player and any other components you own now or will maybe buy sometime in the future. There is also a dedicated phono input for a turntable, as well as a convenient 3.5mm input on the front panel for smartphones. A full size headphone socket provides the sonic goods while tone controls help tailor the sound to your liking. With Bluetooth built-in, streaming music from your smartphone, tablet or laptop is just a click away. Pair with your device and effortlessly stream your stored music and popular music streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music. Covering all the bases, the Cambridge Audio AXR85 also features a built-in FM/AM radio tuner and with 30 presets, you can quickly call up all your favourite stations - please note radio reception is not available in all areas. With a white display screen, this sleek looking amplifier is housed in a substantial chassis which sports a stylish thick grey brushed aluminium front panel which looks great in any interior and it comes with...another remote control!

Let's face it, you've probably got 100's or even 1000's of CDs! These still offer a high level of performance and way above MP3 - the basic standard on streaming services. The AXC25 is the entry level CD Player in the Cambridge range which naturally has all the essentials a good disc player needs. The Cambridge AXC25 is a super-cool and versatile CD player with gapless playback and featuring a high quality digital to analogue converter (DAC), to convert the digital information stored on a CD into an analogue sound signal. As well as regular audio CDs, the AXC25 will play MP3 and WMA files from home recorded CD-R, CD-RW and CD-ROM discs. There's also a dedicated digital output which allows you to record from a CD to a digital format or even connect to a standalone DAC when you're ready to improve your sound even further. With a multi-function display screen, this sleek looking CD Player is housed in a substantial chassis which sports a stylish thick grey front panel which looks great in any interior.

B&W 607 S2 Speakers

The B&W 607 S2 Anniversary Edition bookshelf speakers are your entry into the 600 series and even though they are small they sing with a big heart and are perfect for a quality stereo music system in a small to medium size room where no compromise to the sound is allowed.

Just like the other members of the 600 Series Anniversary Edition, the 607 S2 has received carefully considered refinements originally lavished on the 700 Signature series, with a complete overhaul of the crossover components to deliver greatly improved resolution and transparency. This bookshelf design borrows heavily from B&W’s higher ranges and features a refined Decoupled Double Dome tweeter, from the 700 Series, along with a Continuum cone FST mid/bass driver, derived from the 800 Diamond series.

Of course, the Bowers & Wilkins 607 S2 bookshelf speakers are quite capable of serving as main speakers in a home theatre system in a smaller room but primarily these are intended as a great pair of sonically excellent speakers for a quality stereo system. They are small enough to fit almost anywhere and, as well as the crowd pleasing Matte Black & White finishes, B&W has introduced some tasty new Oak & Red Cherry finishes to keep the style gurus happy.

Combine these speakers with a quality amplifier and source – see our suggestions below – and you have the perfect system for a smaller room on a smaller budget. The only compromise will be on deep bass and maximum loudness but never fear, a REL Subwoofer will fill in the lower registers nicely and give you a much bigger sound than your eyes can comprehend. Overall, in their class, these new Bowers & Wilkins 607 S2 Anniversary Edition bookshelf speakers are unbeatable.

Cabinets: As you can see from our images, the new 600 Anniversary Editions are designed to stylishly and subtly integrate with any room design. A lot of attention has been paid to what goes on inside a 600 Series speaker, but that doesn't mean the outside has been neglected. Attention to detail is vital to ensure they look as beautiful as they sound, so they use high-quality materials. But these features aren’t just for show. Solid cabinet construction and unbroken surfaces help limit distortion. B&W have also removed grille pegs and replaced them with magnets. This makes them easily removable when you are listening - yes like all speakers, they will sound better with the grille covers removed! B&W have moved the 'port' to the rear of the cabinet, creating a modern and premium aesthetic look at the front while maintaining the integrity of the acoustic design. And, B&W have expanded the range of colour options. Joining the existing Matte Black & Matte White finishes are Oak (with a white front baffle) & Red Cherry (with a black front baffle) to make all you style gurus very happy.

Note: B&W recommend you connect an amplifier/receiver in the 30 to 100 Watts per channel output range. So what's the deal with the Cambridge AXR85 which is rated at a maximum 85 Watts per channel? The first thing to note is that these speaker specs are at the extreme ends of the spectrum. The second is that it is distortion that kills speakers and this happens when either product is driven past its maximum and that is key. So the Cambridge AXR85 with 85 watts output per channel is right on the money so to speak and in a small to medium room, both amp and speakers operated sensibly will give a really good performance. The last point has to do with the SPL specification. To deliver good bass, the B&W 607 S2's have an 84dB SPL and this low number definitely requires a 'high-current' amplifier design or put simply, something like the Cambridge AXR85 which has the necessary 'grunt' to make great music.  Need to know more? Pre-Terminated Speaker Cable Included: Yes, this system is truly complete. The QED brand has been sold world-wide for over 40 years. In fact they started around about the same time we did. Audio Trends has probably sold enough 79 strand cable to go to the moon and back - well it seems that way! It is a really good quality cable with fairly neutral sound character and at a reasonable price. To make it easy to connect to the amplifier and speakers, our service department solders Deltron banana plugs to all ends making the system truly plug-n-play

Our Take

We thought the previous 607’s sounded very good, especially considering their diminutive size. They offered a natural, articulate sound that at the same time had a decent amount of body, smooth tonality and a nice sense of spaciousness that filled the room. Well, we’re here to tell you that the old is out and it’s time to usher in the new. As B&W did with the 700 Signatures, the new Anniversary Edition 607 S2’s are in another league to their predecessors. Their resolution is improved, they have a new found level of transparency that is uncannily true to the music and their musical flow is now class leading. And with some nice new colours to add to the mix the new 607 S2 Anniversary Edition bookshelf speakers are very impressive indeed. As with all high-resolution speakers a good quality amplifier is required to get the best from them. It doesn’t necessarily need to be massively powerful, as the 607 S2 can be used with amps beginning at 30 Watts, but it does need to offer good clean distortion-free power with plenty of current available to keep the drive units doing exactly what the music demands.

There are other speakers in the same price-range including Acoustic Energy and Paradigm and really all three brands are winners. If you want a bit more bottom end kick, why not invest in a subwoofer? And yes, we do have small subwoofers that will virtually disappear and not cost a truckload. See below for recommendations. Same with Cambridge Audio. The Receiver and CD player are built on solid designs that are proven performers. The power output of the Receiver is ample for the speakers in a small to medium sized room - say around 28 square metres. As is our custom, the system comes with QED 79 strand speaker cable which again is a foundation product. If you've got a few extra dollars to spend, upgrade the cable to QED Silver Anniversary XT.
