System Overview

Here we have an all British stereo system which is sure to bring a smile to your face. The Cambridge Audio Evo 75 Streaming Amplifier is one of those products that, as soon as you see it, you wonder how you lived without it. Of course it has music streaming built in, which is quickly becoming the norm these days, a beautiful full colour screen on the front with tactile knobs and buttons coupled to a wonderful sounding 75 Watt per channel amplifier section which performs just as well as you would expect from a Cambridge Audio product.

The Q Acoustics Concept 30 Bookshelf Speakers are part of their upmarket series and these are seriously beautiful speakers with a minimalist design aesthetic that looks sleek and purposeful, yet also warmly inviting. Fortunately they sound as good as they look and are available in three modern finishes, Black, White or Silver Lacquer.

Stringing this wonderful system together is a set of Van den Hul Clearwater speaker cables terminated with metal QED Airloc banana plugs. This speaker cable is our go to cable at this price point because it just gets out of the way and lets the system do its thing.

Finally, we have a subwoofer option. Some people don’t want a subwoofer because they think they don’t have room for it or would rather spend their money on other things. Both those reasons are perfectly valid, however the T/5x is small enough to fit almost anywhere so may have to rethink that excuse. Others believe that a subwoofer will spoil the sound of their system with intrusive thumping bass. Believe us, with a well set up REL, nothing could be further from the truth. What you actually get is a bigger more dynamic sound that is more spacious, with a more holographic midrange and smoother high frequencies. In fact you whole system just sounds like a bigger better version of itself. And if you want the smoothest, best integrated bass and the most lifelike dynamics then we suggest investing in two REL T/5x’s.

Q Acoustics Concept 30 Bookshelf Speakers

Taking acoustic technology and design cues from the flagship Concept 300, while also introducing new audio innovations, the Concept 30 standmount delivers truly high-end home audio performance. Since its founding in 2006, Q Acoustics has built an unrivalled reputation for designing, engineering and manufacturing innovative, high-performance and class-leading loudspeakers at every price point. This ongoing and concerted demonstration of excellence has led to the Concept series.

Every element of acoustic innovation featured in the Concept series is engineered towards designing the ‘quietest’ cabinet possible. From the pioneering Gelcore™ cabinet construction, the microscopic analysed internal P2P™ bracing through to the unparalleled isolation suspension system base and the unique driver design, Q Acoustics’ expert engineers have continually created, evolved and refined these technologies. The result is as close to the resonance-free, speaker-design Holy Grail as possible. Unaffected by internal and external resonances, the Q Acoustics Concept 30 bookshelf/stand mount speakers deliver focused stereo imaging, accurate audio and an extended holographic soundstage to emulate a live performance in the home.

Van den Hul The Clearwater Terminated Speaker Cable

A great way to get into a high quality silver plated speaker cable for a very reasonable price. The Van den Hul Clearwater has detail and clarity to spare combined with a natural appealing warmth.

With the design of The Clearwater, it was AJ Van den Hul's intention to produce the best match between quality and price. The decision was taken to work with 2 groups of strands with a conductor size of AWG 14; this was because in many situations the distance between the amplifier and the loudspeakers is limited. Therefore a twin-lead construction was made with 2 x 98 strands of a dense very pure silver coated Matched Crystal (MC) Oxygen Free Copper. The two conductor groups are twisted in opposite directions. The resistance of each lead is: 0.9 Ohm/100 meter. The capacitance between the two conductors is: 17.5 pF/meter.

Optional REL T/5x Subwoofer

The REL T/5x subwoofer is the entry into REL’s T/x range and is quite surprising given its modest size and price. If you have a small to medium size room and want to really open out and deepen the sound of your system with an injection of bass dynamics then adding a REL T/5x could do the trick very nicely.

No model in REL’s long history has sold more units nor engendered more affection than the T/5. Here reimagined in a modern, elegant, new form factor, T/5x’s mission remains the same: make remarkable bass far beyond its modest size, do so in a way that complements every interior’s style, and eliminate all visual distraction. Mission Accomplished.

After a serious injection of bass dynamics in your medium size room? Want something nicely designed that all members of the family might appreciate the look of? Need something that’s not too big but still offers ample performance? REL might just have you covered with the T/5x. This 125 Watt subwoofer is not overly large but it packs some serious punch. It also features a nicely curved cabinet which makes a refreshing change from the stark look of most subwoofers. At the price it is possibly the perfect blend of design, technology, power and performance.

Please Note: The Concept 30 speakers have the sort of bass response you would expect for their size and many people will be quite happy with them on their own. The figure they go down to is 54 Hz. If you add a REL T/5x you take that figure down to 32 Hz* which gives you almost an octave more bass which will make quite a difference to the scale and depth of the musical presentation. Combining two T/5x’s delivers greater openness, delicacy, precision and also warmth, body and solidity; fleshing out the sonic performance of EVERYTHING in the sound. Also, if you have a room with acoustic issues, and who doesn’t, you will benefit from the potential room-smoothing effect of having two properly set-up subs evening out the response and reducing peaks and dips in response.

*To put these frequencies into perspective, the lowest note on a standard 88 key piano is 27.5 Hz while a Bosendorfer piano, with its extra bass keys, goes down to 16.5 Hz. A full size pipe organ goes even lower to a stomach churning 8 Hz through a 64’ pipe and 16 Hz through a 32’ pipe. An electric or double bass goes down to 41 Hz, although five string versions can go as low as 31 Hz. A kick drum in a rock or pop drum kit can be tuned to have a fundamental frequency as low as 50 Hz while the floor tom can get down to 60 Hz.

If you’re looking to reproduce these frequencies through a REL subwoofer, the T/9x goes down to 27 Hz, the S/812 19 Hz, and the Reference Series No. 25 goes down to a room shaking 14 Hz and is often used in two stacks of three to give the most effortless bass you have ever heard.
