About Cambridge Audio Alva Duo

With the Cambridge Audio Duo phono pre-amp you can enjoy the unique warmth of vinyl and all the fine analogue detail, giving you quality sound at a modest price. There's something unique about listening to vinyl, something that digital media can't reproduce in quite the same way. While the latest digital formats sound incredible, there's detail and warmth that can't always be expressed in 0s and 1s, crackle that adds character, and live music simply comes to life. Most audio gear built since the mid 1980's and budget price Home Theatre Receivers do not have the ability to hook-up a Turntable without a separate phono pre-amplifier. With the Cambridge Duo that's quickly rectified, as this phono pre-amp simply plugs into any standard AUX input, allowing your records to be heard at the correct volume level. Even if your hi-fi does have a built-in phono stage, it's absolutely worth considering the Duo. Of course the Duo can also be used on both Moving Magnet and Moving Coil cartridges.

Moving Coil Cartridge Compatibility: One of the biggest advances over its little brother, the Solo, is the ability to amplify Moving Coil (MC) type cartridges. These have an even lower output than Moving Magnet (MM) type cartridges and therefore require dedicated amplification. Once correctly amplified, however, the sound quality is stunning with a smoother yet more detailed sound usually possible. If you're serious about vinyl then fitting a good quality Moving Coil cartridge is an upgrade that comes highly recommended.

Why Consider The Duo?

It's very easy to add noise in the phono stage, which is why Cambridge Audio designed the Duo using premium components chosen for exceptional accuracy, amplifying the signal without distorting it. This high quality design features single-ended 'Class A' gain stages and discrete transistors, instead of the more common integrated circuits. This gives less cross-talk and interference across the signal path. What this means for sound quality is a rich, full-bodied sound that's also low on distortion and very quiet in terms of background noise. The folk at Cambridge also know that not every phono cartridge delivers perfectly even left and right channel output signals, so they gave this pre-amp a fine-tune balance control that lets you correct any differences. If you don’t want to share your rich vinyl sound you’re in luck as the Duo features an integrated 6.35mm headphone output so you can enjoy your records privately. There is also a switch mode power supply, quality fully shielded case and new circuit board layout that work together to reduce hum and unwanted noise. The duo is also quite eco-friendly with less than half a watt standby power consumption and an economic power down feature if it has not been used in 20 minutes.

Compatibility: Cambridge Audio has a passion for creating high-value audio gear that captures every last drop of detail and emotion from your music. Cambridge Audio’s Duo has been designed to complement the wide range of Turntables available today. This high-quality yet extraordinary value pre-amplifier contains the amplification required to enable you to connect your Turntable to your stereo Amplifier or Home Theatre Receiver. The Duo works with all popular Turntables that use either a Moving Magnet cartridge (the type with a removable stylus or needle) or a higher spec Turntable with a low output Moving Coil cartridge and if the latter is your choice then the Duo is the absolute minimum you need.

Do I Really Need A Separate Phono Pre-amplifier?

As stated above,Some Amplifiers and Receivers are already able to "technically" support Turntable connections with a Moving Magnet (MM) cartridge, but these in-built phono pre-amplifiers are massively out-performed by the Duo and especially so when using a Moving Coil cartridge which they usually cannot support. We believe that any serious vinyl lover will immediately hear the benefits. Connected using a single stereo audio interconnect cable, the Duo is set up in seconds allowing you to appreciate stunning clarity, musicality and resolution from your vinyl collection. So come on and rediscover the hidden depths of your vinyl with the wonderfully transparent-sounding Cambridge Duo phono pre-amplifier.
