About B&W 704 S2 Floorstanding Speakers
The B&W 704 S2 is a slim, high-performance floorstander designed to blend unobtrusively into your home environment.
Bring the breathtaking clarity and definition of studio sound home with the new 700 Series. Replacing the CM Series, the range combines studio-grade 800 Series Diamond technologies with purpose-built innovations to elevate home audio to an entirely new level. And all this from room-friendly cabinets designed to fit beautifully into your home environment.
A slim, elegant floorstander designed to blend unobtrusively into your home environment, while providing the commanding presence of a much larger speaker. Music is a revelation, with details picked out in pin-sharp detail and with exceptional realism. Looks can be deceiving. Despite its slim dimensions, the 704 S2 has the commanding presence of a much larger speaker, thanks to advanced technologies such as a dedicated Continuum cone FST midrange.
The 700 Series is an entirely new range of speakers. Compared with the outgoing CM Series, every transducer has changed and radically improved. To do this, B&W have borrowed some of the most advanced technologies from their flagship 800 Series Diamond, adapting them to suit a more attainable price point. And they’ve introduced entirely new technologies, designed specifically for this range.
Carbon Dome Tweeter: Carbon Dome tweeters are a brand new technology purpose-built for the 700 Series. Delivering a dramatic improvement on the aluminium double-dome tweeter, they raise the breakup threshold to 47kHz, for pinpoint imaging accuracy and detail.
Continuum Cone: First introduced with the 800 Series Diamond, the Continuum cone represents the biggest step-change in midrange performance since Kevlar. Its woven, coated material provides highly controlled break-up, resulting in a more open, neutral midrange.
Decoupled Midrange: The midrange driver in the floor-standers feature a decoupled design, adapted from a similar system in the 800 Series Diamond. Decoupling reduces cabinet colouration, and boosts midrange clarity.
Aerofoil Profile Cone: Developed using advanced computer modeling techniques, the Aerofoil Profile bass cone has a variable thickness, providing stiffness and rigidity where it’s needed most. The result: deep and dynamic bass.
FlowPort: Great bass depends on a smoothly regulated airflow. Flowport minimises turbulence by using dimples, like a golf ball. They generate tiny eddy currents, over which air flows smoothly and silently. Bass sounds smooth and tight at all volumes.
Bring Hollywood Home: Providing the ideal balance of high-performance acoustics and living room-friendly dimensions, 700 Series speakers are a superlative choice for home cinema sound. Pair them with one of the two centre-channel speakers in the range and the powerful DB4S subwoofer, and you’re set for a truly transformational movie experience.
B&W In The News
In leading recording studios, music that will soon be heard everywhere is heard first through Bowers & Wilkins speakers. “Bowers & Wilkins speakers are the only speakers I have found that enable me to accurately listen to how the original performance has been recorded.” - Peter Cobbin, producer and sound engineer. Recent feature film work includes Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Doctor Strange and Alien: Covenant.
Our Take On The 704 S2's
From hi-fi stereo to home theatre, from small to medium spaces, you’ll find the 704 S2 speakers very suitable. They deliver the classic and smooth sound that makes B&W popular. Floor spikes and heavy duty speaker wire binding posts are standard. There is a base that is included although many prefer the look without as per our main illustration. Efficiency is only 88dB so you will need a good quality amplifier or receiver to extract their full capabilities - especially if you want to play them loud. Of course any system is only as good as its weakest link, but taking short-cuts with amplification is only cheating yourself! The 704 S2's will work well with higher spec AV Receivers but you will probably need to add a power amplifier for at least the front two or three channels. With centre speaker options and a subwoofer you can really go to town with the 704 S2's.
