Atacama HMS 2.1 Speaker Stands (Black)
Atacama is based in the UK, have won tons of awards for all their audio related products. They are an innovative company that make amazing products that make your music firstly sound better and we think, look better too!
Do you have a "serious" speaker? Well, this is a "serious" stand. The HMS 2.1 (High Mass Series) has been developed for large reference class bookshelf speakers. When filled with the Atabites optional accessory, each stand will weigh around 50Kg! The Atacama HMS 2.1 (High Mass Stand 2.1) was developed with the co-operation and expertise of one of Britain’s most highly respected speaker manufacturers and features a large 200mm x 225mm heavy duty top plate.
Atacama speaker stands are not cheap. But name me anything other than fresh air that is both good for you and cheap. Yes, there are plenty of cheap stands coming out of SE Asia and if price is your thing then fine. But if your music like a journey is more important, then you will find Atacama brings it all together in a product that is first engineered and then manufactured. Designed for those looking for a reference quality speaker stand, the HMS 2.1 has a 30% increase in mass loading capacity over their equivalent professional grade SL series. Once each pair is fully loaded with Atabites - 84kg - the HMS 2.1 will give you the ultimate platform when needing to optimize your loudspeaker performance.
Increased Stability Option: To increase stability, and improve sound even further, Atacama have designed a Mass Loading Base Plate (sold separately) that has been designed to fit out of sight within the base plate of speaker stands. The Mass Loading Base Plate pack adds 1.5kg to each stand increasing the sound dampening and raising the stability of each support. The Mass Loading Base Plate is made in the UK from Carbon Steel and comes in a twin pack painted in Satin black. However, if you are going to and we do recommend you use Atacama Atabites, then depending how much you buy this may not be necessary!
Timber Floors? No problems! Atacama manufacture what we affectionately call 'spike shoes' that sit under each spike and thus eliminate damage to timber flooring. They can also be used on tile or stone floors. They are and optional extra accessory and you will need two sets of the heavy duty versions especially if you add Atabites.
In The News
"Tests proved that the stereo image improved still further and that the base was both tighter and subtly extended. The result is truly excellent and affordable audiophile loudspeaker stands". - HI-FI WORLD Magazine
Atacama MD Mr. Carl Sambell when embarking on production of quality speaker stands back in the early 1990's demonstrated that he and his company had a thorough understanding of what is needed when he stated: "The problem when designing a speaker stand is that it firstly needs to be functional, i.e. it needs to be sonically dead and be able to absorb the vibration from the speaker that it supports. Functionality is reasonably easy to achieve, but trying to combine functionality with visual appeal is not so, particularly when you consider that this type of product is likely to be sitting in someone's lounge. The design brief was clear, design a high performance speaker stand whilst creating a product that was aesthetically pleasing to the eye and at the same time retain a competitive price point."
Why Do You Need Speaker Stands?
That question is often quickly followed up with another: "Can't they just sit on the floor?" The truth is you can put the speakers wherever you like but the location and positioning absolutely and significantly affect performance. When bookshelf sized speakers are placed on the floor or against a wall their sonic output becomes 'connected' to the floor or walls. This results in sound that is muddy, distorted and lacking in clarity. Speaker stands elevate and isolate speakers from floors and walls. Sound is clearer and cleaner with much better imaging and a greater sense of realism.
Although all the staff at Audio Trends love music, there is no doubt that a number of these music enthusiast's - Andrew & Wes - are definitely in the audiophile category. They not only enjoy music here at the shop, but go home to tweak their system, enjoy a new album or download a high res album. They have a variety of audio gear at home and have had everything you could imagine in the hi-fi department. Why am I telling you this? Because they are not salesmen (none of us are) and will discuss and demonstrate how quality stands make your music sound better. Come and meet them or call to discuss how a pair of quality bookshelf speakers and quality stands can sound amazing.
How To Make Stands Even Better
Where appropriate - like here with the stems of the Atacama HMS Stands - the post/tubes are hollow and can be 'filled' or mass-loaded to further dampen vibrations, help minimise unwanted resonances and as a bonus extra, provide added stability. You could fill them with lead shot or sand as some do. But eventually these will cause the stands to rust. Not good!
However there is a better solution to make your stands sound even better. Audio Trends recommend that you fill the stands with Atabites SMD-Z 7.5HD inert filler to achieve maximum sonic performance. Up to 84kg (10 -12 tubs) can be used per pair. Click here to read more about Atabites.
