Product Description

Save with Anthem Summer Audio Visual OffersAnthem is a regular trophy collector from the international hi-fi press when it comes to delivering the highest level sound quality. The latest lineup of state-of-the-art audio/video performers with an exceptional performance to value relationship is now available.

Featured here is the Anthem MRX-720 that delivers a genuine 140 Watts per channel at 8 Ohms in stereo mode which is enough to drive most speakers very well. As with all Home Theatre Receivers the power will drop when you add more speakers. We estimate the '720 will pump out around 100 Watts (our estimate) of clean power with 7 speakers connected and running full-time. Contrary to what many sales guys say, this is usually enough for most consumers. However, if you need more power, the smart money says to add either an Anthem MCA-225 Power Amplifier for the front two speakers or if you have a similar centre speaker then an Anthem MCA-235 Power Amplifier for the front three speakers. That then leaves a massive amount of power available for the remaining speakers! If it is music first and movies second, then this is what Anthem products deliver by the bucket full.

Surround Sound Formats: Of course the MRX-720 has all the essential Dolby and DTS processing, but the main talking point here is of course the inclusion of Dolby Atmos. If you really love your movies but want the sound to take you into another world, then you need Dolby Atmos! Demonstrations are available in-store but be warned - you'll want it. No you will say "I need it!" So what is it?

Dolby Atmos: It's new and will be a winner because with Dolby Atmos, sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill your home theatre with astonishing clarity, power, detail and depth of sound. The MRX-720 has the processing power to run a more enveloping 7, 9* or 11* channel Dolby Atmos system using 5.2.2, 5.2.4, 7.2.2, 7.2.4, 9.2.2* or 11.2.2* configurations utilising ceiling mounted, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.. Here's how it can be configured.

  • A 5.2.2 or 5.2.4 speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.2 speaker layout complemented by 2 or 4 overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.
  • A 7.2.2 or 7.2.4 configuration is based on a 7.2 speaker layout with either 2 or 4 overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.
  • A 9.2.2 configuration is based on a 9.2 speaker layout with 2 overhead speakers.

For more information, see our Dolby Atmos FAQ page.

DTS:X This is the next generation audio codec from DTS that leverages object-based audio to enable new audio experiences in immersion and interactivity. The Anthem MRX-720 is "ready" when this exciting new format becomes available sometime in 2016. So what is it? DTS:X places sound where it would occur naturally in space, creating the most lifelike, multi-dimensional audio experience ever. Free from channel restrictions, sound can be placed and moved to where you would hear it in the real world. Because DTS:X doesn’t require any specific speaker layout, you can arrange your home theatre system however you want it. With DTS:X you’re in control of your listening experience. That hard-to-hear line in a movie can be lifted out of the background sounds for a more personal entertainment experience.

DTS Play 5 - Limitless Music. App-Controlled Convenience. Wireless Connectivity: Everyone wants instant access to their digital audio library, anywhere in the home. And Anthem’s MRX Series with DTS Play-Fi technology is the perfect, high performance means of delivery. The Anthem MRX-720 A/V Receiver can take full dynamic advantage of the better-than CD-quality sound quality delivered by the DTS Play-Fi® streaming technology. DTS Play-Fi will stream pure, bit-for-bit, lossless audio, for uncompromised quality sound; up to 16-bit/48kHz. DTS Play-Fi has a range of up to 100' from your wireless router. Download the free DTS Play-Fi App onto your Apple iOS (7.0+) deviceAndroid (4.0+) smartphone/tablet, or Windows (7/8) PC for control over the MRX 720's DTS Play-Fi features.

Partnered with the leader in Wi-Fi streaming. DTS PlayFi Wi-Fi streaming technology supports a host of high quality file formats. Controlled directly from your smart device or computer in any operating system, the “Open Ecosystem” of DTS Play-Fi technology makes it easy to stream music throughout your home, and to add more wireless streaming devices on the fly.

Features and Functions: All the music in the world at your control; Stream from your digital music library or an online audio service like Spotify, Songza, Pandora and more ...

Connectivity: The Anthem MRX-720 is well equipped for those who want a complete control centre in one box. In addition to the high quality amplification, the product has plenty of inputs. On the audio side there are a total of five analogue line-level inputs (RCA type) and two line-level outputs - one for recording if you will ever use it and the other for a second zone audio setup. A great feature is also the ability to hook-up individual power amps to 11 channels in conjunction with two subwoofers. Adding an Anthem MCA-225 stereo power amp is a smart option if you have a "thirsty" (read inefficient) set of front speakers. HDMI inputs total seven including one that is compatible with MHL devices with two HDMI outputs. The digital side is very well catered for with 3 optical/2 coaxial inputs and an optical output. Speaker connection is via high-quality binding posts which will accept bare wire or the universally accepted and preferred 'banana' plugs.

Audiophile-Grade Components: The Anthem MRX-720 AV receiver utilises audiophile-grade components; such as premium 32-bit/768kHz differential-output D/A converters for high-resolution sound, tri-core 32 digital signal processing (DSP) with Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD capability and a brushed anodised aluminium front-panel to resist unwanted vibration.

Advanced Load Monitoring (ALM) Technology: Anthem's exclusive ALM circuitry protects the amplifier's sensitive output devices by constantly monitoring temperature, current, and voltage to ensure optimum long-term performance. ALM is totally non-invasive; it is not in the signal path and only engages in the most extreme circumstances to protect the amplifier from damage by maintaining the safe operating area of the output devices.

Anthem Room Correction: And then there's Anthem room correction (ARC)! Even when the finest speakers are perfectly positioned, the room itself still has a dramatic impact on a system’s sound, an impact more profound than that of any individual component. Various 'electronic' solutions have fallen in and out of favour over the years, but none has solved the problem of “the room.” Until Anthem ARC that is.

Using proprietary processes and the power of your PC the ARC system, years in development and included with your Anthem MRX-720, analyses each speaker’s in-room sound and then computes or corrects the effects that reflective surfaces such as walls, floors and ceilings have on the sound radiating from a loudspeaker. Removing the effects of these obstacles allows your audio equipment to achieve a more natural sound in any room, as close to the lab standard as possible with the required correction to yield optimal performance from every speaker. It’s a process that takes less than five minutes! Anthem’s approach is a true audiophile solution to the problems of the room. ARC is garnering rave reviews across the industry. For more information, see the ARC data sheet in the downloads & support section of the Anthem website.

However, although ARC is definitely the best 'electronic' room correction system currently on the market, it can only do so much. A bad sonic environment is still a bad sonic environment! ARC will make it as good as it can electronically, but additional room treatments will make almost any room sound better. Audio Trends can help with both the design and supply/installation of room treatments.

AnthemLogic: The MRX-720 receiver incorporates Anthem's proprietary AnthemLogic sound technology to enhance 2 Channel stereo audio sources; there are two modes - Cinema & Music. AnthemLogic-Cinema lets you experience home theatre surround sound from any 2 Channel audio source. A large, enveloping and dynamic listening experience is created making 2-channel movies sound more "home-theatre" like. AnthemLogic-Music enhances the stereo listening experience without detracting from the stereo soundstage and with no echo or reverberation effects. To ensure that the purity of the stereo music soundstage is in not compromised, the centre-channel is not used.

Multi-Zone Functionality: The Anthem MRX-720 offers multi-zone functionality for playback of the same or different audio sources in up to two rooms. It also allows you to watch to the same HDMI video sources on up to two TVs.

  • Zone 2: The MRX-720's Zone 2 function allows you to enjoy the same or different audio source in two rooms of your home. You can be enjoying a movie in your main room, while someone else can be listening to a music track in another room. You will need an additional amplifier and pair of speakers in Zone 2. You can select the receiver's FM tuner, analogue audio input sources, plus optical & coaxial digital audio inputs (2 channel PCM only) for Zone 2 (HDMI audio/video cannot be sent to Zone 2). You can choose to control the volume of Zone 2 from your MRX-720 or a second amplifier.
  • Zone 2 Input Follows Main (Party Mode): This feature allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2, simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog or digital; including HDMI). During this mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone & Zone 2's volume level can be adjusted independently. Utilise this function when you want to play back an audio source as background music in two rooms of your home.
  • Dual HDMI Outputs: The receiver's two HDMI outputs are parallel, so the same HDMI audio/video signal is sent through both and can be used simultaneously (video is output at the resolution supported by both TVs).

HDMI 2.0a: The MRX-720 incorporates an advanced video section that features the latest HDMI 2.0a specification, including support for 4K/60 Hz Ultra-HD video, BT.2020 Wide Colour Gamut, High Dynamic Range (HDR), and 4:4:4 Pure Color sub-sampling. The MRX 720 also features HDCP 2.2 compatibility, a requirement for 4K Ultra HD copy-protected content.  Use a premium high-speed 18Gbps HDMI cable for the best 4K/HDR performance.

  • 4:4:4 Colour Subsampling: All of the receiver's rear-panel HDMI jacks support RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, and YCbCr 4:2:0 colour subsampling (@ 60Hz or 50Hz). With 4:4:4 colour subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (colour) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB colour palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colours, plus greater colour accuracy and detail.

HDR (High Dynamic Range): HDR provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colours, plus greater depth.

Our Take

You may ask though what makes Anthem MRX Receivers worth serious consideration when there is so much consumer choice? Simple! They sound really good! Easy to say this, doesn't every product we sell sound good? Absolutely...and especially if connected to the right speakers. For most the reasoning usually goes if it's a big brand name and sounds OK, then buy it. Yep, we have plenty of customers who fit that category and at least we know we give them a pretty good package. The MRX-720 is of course Anthem's introduction to Dolby Atmos which is the must-have technology if you love your movies. Of course we like the 140 Watts RMS output when driving just two speakers and basically they are the two major differences over the MRX-520 although not really basic! The other plus is the 11 channel preamplifier outputs which will allow owners to add more power amplifiers to meet their individual requirements. Price? When you actually consider the audio options and power output, the price is quite reasonable. Nothing made by man in this world that's cheap is good, so we'd rather say the '720 is excellent value for money.

So if you are someone who wants to purchase more than just an 'item', want a system that delivers a presence that keeps you coming back for more...and yet at a price that is still reasonable, then this is what Anthem is about. Real world knockout performance.
