The great thing about active speakers is that all you need is two speakers and that could be your whole system. Either Bluetooth to them or play you TV through them and that’s it – nice and simple. The down side is you don’t have as much choice as only a few companies make active speakers and they are normally fairly entry level, with the main exception being KEF who makes some wonderful high end active models like the LS60. Also, when you start plugging in CD players or turntables it starts to look like a normal system so not that minimal any more. At that point you might as well buy a stereo amplifier and a pair of passive speakers. This will give you far more choice regarding performance, size, look, finish etc and also allow you to upgrade one piece at a time.
