Any speakers need to match the size room they’re in, so a small pair of active speakers might be fine for a bedroom or study, but you will need a larger more powerful set for an open plan situation. Next you need to decide what you are going to play through them. If you just want to stream music from your phone or tablet then all you need is a Bluetooth connection and you’re good to go. If you want to plug your TV in you’re going to need an optical input at least and preferably an HDMI ARC connection so you can use your TV remote to turn the volume up and down. If it’s a component like a CD Player you’ll need a line level input and if you’re going to be spinning vinyl then a phono connection would be required (unless your turntable has a phono preamp built in). Lastly, a remote control is always useful as many active speakers have no front panel controls.
