It depends on what type of speaker you are wanting to purchase. Most speakers are "passive", meaning they need an amplifier to make sound, you can tell because they only have speaker connectors and no power cable. Then there are "active" speakers, which have built-in amps. These include simple plug-in models for TVs or turntables. Then we have "Bluetooth speakers", which accept the streamed audio signal from your phone or tablet. We also have the whole smart speaker category epitomized by the likes of Sonos with built in streaming designed to be used with your favourite music service and the option for multi-room audio. All these different types of speakers have their place depending on your requirements.
