Cambridge Audio 840E Pre-Amplifier

Description

Cambridge Audio has taken the Azur 840 series to its peak with the introduction of two new models – the 840E pre-amplifier and 840W power amplifier. The 840E is a high-end pre-amplifier which uses Cambridge Audio’s new proprietary Terrapin™ modules for unprecedented audio fidelity forming the perfect partner for the accompanying 840W power amplifier. A customisable front panel display means tone controls can be selected and stored by nameable input. Volume, input and tone are also all controlled by highly sophisticated relay driven circuits.

Rather than use common op-amps for the critical low level gain stages of the 840E (and 840W) Cambridge Audio instead decided to design its own audiophile amplifier modules. The subject of a separate research and development project these unique modules have been designed with single minded dedication to the very best audio performance possible. Two types exist, the TPA amplifier and TPB buffer module fully optimized for their respective roles. Nicknamed the Terrapins (because of their 10 pins) they add yet another dimension to Cambridge Audio’s commitment to audio excellence.

A sophisticated resistor ladder and relay based attenuator for volume (1dB steps) and balance controls allows remarkably accurate volume control with channel balance. Each channel has its own relays and ladder for superb stereo separation and imaging. This kind of feature is normally the preserve of exotic high-end equipment and is relatively unheard of at this price point

As the pre-amp has its own power supply, it operates in complete isolation to the power amplifier and does not suffer from any interference, something which is also aided by two balanced inputs.

The 840E features an extremely attractive and user friendly front panel display which is customisable to show which input is selected.

The Azur 840E makes room for eight inputs, two of which have both fully balanced (XLR) and unbalanced connections, ideal for use with the Azur 840C up-sampling CD player. These inputs can be named as desired by the user on the custom-designed display to show CD, MP3, Phono etc.

Completing the rear panel is an RS232 control port, and multi-room outputs to connect the 840E to custom installations. This plethora of connections enables complete integration with multi-room entertainment systems including two way interface with touch screen control panels. Alternatively, the 840E is Incognito Ready™. This means that two additional rooms can access the source components connected to the 840E via Cambridge Audio’s Incognito system amplified keypads and passive speakers or active in-ceiling speakers. An independent Incognito power supply links to the 840E, enabling audio and low voltage power to be transmitted to each Incognito keypad using only one run of CAT5 cable.

As with all Azur products, the foundation of the 840E’s excellence is a bespoke chassis. This comprises an incredibly thick 7mm front panel and extruded side panels, both fashioned from aluminum, which combine with a 2mm formed steel base plate and specially designed vibration absorbing feet. The result is an ultra rigid, low resonance, acoustically dampened platform for the electronics to sit in.

The 840E is available in either silver or black and comes complete with the latest elegant, slim-line navigator style Azur remote handset offering full control of Azur CD players, Incognito keypads and discrete commands for custom install use. As an additional facet, all Cambridge Audio remotes feature iPod™ Command – which means that basic iPod controls such as volume and track select can be controlled from the comfort of the user’s sofa. This boon requires the use of an Apple or other universal dock.

Cambridge Audio 840W Power Amplifier

Description

Cambridge Audio has taken the Azur 840 series to its peak with the introduction of two new models – the 840E pre-amplifier and 840W power amplifier. The 840W is a high-end power amplifier that has been designed by the same team behind the 840A and uses an evolution of Cambridge Audio’s hugely innovative Class XD™ technology for a highly detailed naturally musical performance. The second generation Class XD is now complemented by a new output stage carefully adjusted to integrate with this novel technology, revised balanced inputs for lower distortion and noise. An awesome 200W @ 8 Ohms gives excellent load driving ability or, a truly massive 500W bridged mono can be harnessed for even ‘difficult’ high-end speakers.

At the core of the 840W’s strength is a patent pending, Class XD (crossover displacement) technology (first seen in the 840A) and which has been subtly revised following continuing post-launch development and critical evaluation. This unique design gives pure Class A operation at low levels, moving smoothly into an enhanced version of Class B at higher levels. This system should not be confused with Class AB, which inherently generates greater distortion at high levels than a pure Class B design. XD technology feeds a controlled current into the output stage actively displacing the crossover point in a new way so that the usual Class B crossover point no longer occurs at zero volume - the worst possible position in terms of distortion – but at a significant output level. The result is a smooth and linear transition between the two modes of operation, which differs significantly from the abrupt, gain transition of a Class AB amplifier. To facilitate this, the Azur 840W amplifier includes a massive, oversized low flux toroidal transformer, incorporating a silicone-steel screen.

In our ongoing development of Class XD we have conducted exhaustive research into further improvements of our amplifier designs to squeeze everything out of this innovative technique. This in turn led to a new output stage topology being developed which has been incorporated into the 840W. Two pairs of very high current output transistors are used per channel (for the amplifier output) plus an extra high current transistor per channel for the XD circuit.

The 840W can also be used in either bi-amped or bridged mono configurations. When bi-amping, one 840W (of the pair) powers each speaker so that the tweeters and woofers each have their own dedicated amplifier channel. Alternatively the bridged mono mode allows the use of two 840Ws with each configured as a 500 watt monobloc. In fact combinations of the two regimes allow the use of one, two, four or even more 840Ws to be used, taking it to the truly stratospheric high-end.

Also included is the latest development of Cambridge Audio’s proprietary CAP5 protection system. CAP5 (Cambridge Audio Protection 5) is an innovative and intelligent protection system. It constantly monitors the amplifier, without degrading signal purity, ensuring ultimate reliability. There is also short-circuit detection and a solid-state temperature sensor with over-heat cut out to ensure the amplifier delivers high performance.

All this proprietary engineering is housed within our low resonance, acoustically dampened chassis which includes a 7mm thick aluminum front panel.

Parasound JC-2 Stereo Pre-Amplifier

Parasound JC-2 Stereo Pre-Amplifier

Description

The Parasound Halo JC 2 is a precision analog stereo preamplifier that audiophiles will use to switch between audio source components and to control the output level of the connected power amplifier. While this role may seem relatively simple, many designers and engineers have devoted lifetimes to getting it right.

According to Parasound's president, Richard Schram, "We conceived the Halo JC 2 in the spirit of the JC 1, commissioning John Curl to design a two-channel preamplifier without compromise. The resulting product achieves a higher level of sonic and measured performance than any preamplifier since Parasound was founded in 1981. The sound of the Halo JC 2 is alive with musical detail against a silent background that will give serious audiophiles both the opportunity and desire to re-explore their music collections."

The JC-2 is intended as a companion to the well-received JC-1 power amp. From the beginning, Parasound made quiet operation a priority. To that end, the unit is a true dual mono design, which reduces inter-channel crosstalk. Balanced inputs and outputs are included (as well as single-ended) for their superior noise rejection. And the JC-2 uses solid aluminum partitions to isolate power and control circuitry from sensitive audio elements.

Parasound JC-1 Mono Power Amplifier

Parasound JC-1 Mono Power Amplifier

Description

The JC 1 is a brawny brute weighing 29 Kgs. It outputs 400W into 8 ohms, 800W into 4 ohms, 135 amps of peak current, and 25W of pure class-A power into 8 ohms. According to a blurb by John Curl that accompanies the amp, the design is "based on a complementary differential J-FET input stage followed by two stages of selected push-pull MOSFETs ultimately driving nine pairs of the most powerful complementary bipolar power transistors that are available today."

Curl describes the JC 1 as an outgrowth of his Parasound HCA-2200 from 1997. The JC 1 has much larger heatsinks, twice the power supply, better internal componentry and layout, and its range of operation in class-A has been extended to 25W, which should be enough to keep it from class-AB operation on all but the most demanding musical passages. Even at idle, the JC 1 puts out plenty of heat, so ample ventilation is critical. A switch on the rear allows users to drop class-A operation down to 10W for placement in tight spaces. The direct-coupled design uses a fast-acting DC servo circuit to keep DC from ever reaching the output. Protection for both amplifier and loudspeaker is also provided by a gold-plated relay, and by current-sensing transistors that will open the relay if the current draw exceeds a predetermined amount, whether due to the impedance dropping below 1 ohm or a short at the speaker terminals.
